Improving the cooling performance of cylindrical lithium-ion battery using three passive methods in a battery thermal management system

Hasan Najafi Khaboshan et al.

Summary: This study aims to design a high-performance battery thermal management system utilizing phase change material, metal foam, and fins to keep the lithium-ion battery temperature at the lowest level under discharging with a 3C current rate. Four different cases of BTMS and five different fin shapes are designed and analyzed using a two-equation local non-equilibrium thermal model. The numerical results show that the optimum BTMS can reduce the battery surface temperature by 3K and has a maximum delay of about 470s in PCM melting.

An Internal Heating Strategy for Lithium-Ion Batteries Without Lithium Plating Based on Self-Adaptive Alternating Current Pulse

Wei Li et al.

Summary: AC pulse heating is a low-energy and high-efficiency preheating method for lithium-ion batteries. In this study, a dual RC model and a thermal model were used to predict the battery temperature and negative electrode potential. The upper bound of heating current (UBHC) was determined by the criteria of negative electrode potential reaching 0 V, indicating lithium plating. The proposed self-adaptive AC pulse heating strategy improved the heating efficiency compared to constant amplitude pulse heating.

Feasibility study of a novel oil-immersed battery cooling system: Experiments and theoretical analysis

Jiahao Liu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the feasibility of using transformer oil to develop an oil-immersed battery thermal management system. Through model-scale experiments and theoretical analysis, it is found that stationary transformer oil can effectively cool the battery and reduce temperature inhomogeneity. Increasing oil flow rate can improve the cooling performance, but excessive flow rate will increase power consumption.

Experimental study on the hybrid carbon based phase change materials for thermal management performance of lithium-ion battery module

Mingyi Chen et al.

Summary: The thermal conductivity of phase change material (PCM) is improved by adding hybrid thermal conductivity filler, resulting in better cooling effect in lithium-ion battery (LIB) thermal management. The addition of 1% few-layer graphene and 2% graphite nanoplatelet to the PCM composite materials can effectively decrease the maximal temperature of the battery module under different conditions.

A novel sandwich structured phase change material with well impact energy absorption performance for Li-ion battery application

Yafang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study effectively addresses the safety issues of thermal runaway in batteries induced by rapid charging/discharging and collision by designing phase change materials (PCM) with collision energy absorption properties. The results demonstrate that applying PCM to batteries significantly reduces temperature and improves temperature distribution, while also providing good impact energy absorption performance to protect the battery from collisions. Additionally, a finite element model was developed to analyze the impact process of the battery, showing good agreement with experimental results and providing a new approach to design PCM for battery applications.
