Analyzing occupational heat stress using sensor-based monitoring: a wearable approach with environmental ergonomics perspective

M. Sharma et al.

Summary: Occupational heat stress poses a risk to exposed workers, affecting their productivity and financial burden. Using sensor-based safety helmets to monitor environmental and physiological variables can help indicate heat strain. Testing the proposed safety helmet in different work environments revealed notable variations and higher heat risk exposure outdoors. The wet bulb globe temperature index showed strong associations with thermal stress and discomfort indices. Measured physiological parameters increased during heavy workload activities and were least during light workload tasks. The safety helmet design intervention can effectively monitor heat stress and raise awareness of thermal work conditions.

Designing flocked energy-absorbing material layers into sport and military helmet pads

Yong K. Kim et al.

Summary: The study shows that combining foam materials with FEAM structures can effectively combine the lightweight and excellent impact absorption properties of foam materials with the excellent impact absorption and breathability properties of FEAM. By gradually introducing more comfortable, breathable FEAM layers into the helmet pad structure, some trade-off helmet pad configurations were designed and evaluated.

Evaluation of the convective heat transfer coefficient of human body and its effect on the human thermoregulation predictions

Jingxian Xu et al.

Summary: Human thermoregulation models, especially the Fiala model, are widely accepted for predicting thermoregulatory responses and assessing thermal comfort. However, the convective heat transfer coefficients used in these models were outdated and lacked differentiation between body postures. This study evaluated the impact of improved heat transfer coefficients on the Fiala model accuracy, showing that different body postures can affect the predicted skin temperature.

Effect of movement on convection and ventilation in a skin-clothing-environment system

Ankit Joshi et al.

Summary: An analytical clothing model was developed to consider the impact of body movement on heat transfer, quantifying forced convection in an enclosed air layer and ventilation effects on clothing insulation. The model was validated through experimental cases, demonstrating the ability to simulate heat transfer with high spatial resolution.

Effect of vented helmets on heat stress during wildland firefighter simulation

Katherine Christison et al.

Summary: This study compared the heat accumulation under simulated working conditions between a standard non-vented helmet and a vented helmet for wildland firefighters. The results showed that the vented helmet significantly improved work capacity and comfort, indicating better heat dissipation and reduced physiological strain.

COMPOSITE DESIGN AND THERMAL COMFORT EVALUATION OF SAFETY HELMET WITH PHASE CHANGE MATERIALS COOLING

Wentao Hu et al.

Summary: The study found that high temperature environment has a significant impact on the cooling effect of helmets, with fan cooling technology gradually losing effectiveness under high temperatures. While phase change material safety helmets have good cooling effects at high temperatures, poor ventilation results in sweat clinging to the head causing discomfort. Combining phase change material heat absorption cooling technology with fan cooling technology has been shown to be the most effective helmet model.
