A combined molecular dynamics/Monte Carlo simulation of Cu thin film growth on TiN substrates: Illustration of growth mechanisms and comparison with experiments

Reza Namakian et al.

Summary: The study used a combination of MD/tfMC algorithm to simulate the growth process of Cu on TiN substrate. It was found that Cu initially grows as a pseudomorphic film at the early stage, transitioning from BCC to predominantly FCC structure with nanotwins as the film thickens. The wetting behavior of Cu varied on different TiN surfaces, with vertical growth on N-terminated TiN(111) and 2D islands formation on Ti-terminated TiN(111) leading to the development of a nanotwin structure.

Computational observation of the strengthening of Cu/TiN metal/ceramic interfaces by sub-nanometer interlayers and dopants

Abu Shama Mohammad Miraz et al.

Summary: First principles density functional theory calculations were used to investigate the enhancement of structural integrity of Cu/TiN metal/ceramic interfaces by substitutional doping with Ni, Zn and Sn. It was found that Ni formed sub-nanometer interlayers at the interface, while Zn formed a solid solution with Cu, affecting the resistance to shear and tensile strength differently. Additionally, analysis from partial density of states showed that Ni and Zn accepted electrons differently at the interface, leading to their distinct effects on the interface properties.

Impact of metal/ceramic interactions on interfacial shear strength: Study of Cr/TiN using a new modified embedded-atom potential

Nisha Dhariwal et al.

Summary: The effect of misfit dislocation networks (MDNs) on the stability and shear strength of Cr/TiN was investigated. The study found that the interfacial energy was lowest when MDN was located in the Cr layer adjacent to the chemical interface, resulting in the largest dislocation core widths and shear failure in the ceramic.
