Alloys-by-design: A low-modulus titanium alloy for additively manufacture d biome dical implants

E. Alabort et al.

Summary: This study utilizes an alloy design approach to identify biocompatible titanium alloy compositions with a lower modulus of elasticity than the commonly used Ti-6Al-4V grade. The study also considers the additive manufacturability of the alloys and identifies compositions with low cracking susceptibility and propensity for non-planar growth. An optimal alloy composition is selected for selective laser melting, resulting in an engineered microstructure with outstanding combined strength and ductility.

Recent advances in Ti-6Al-4V additively manufactured by selective laser melting for biomedical implants: Prospect development

A. N. Aufa et al.

Summary: This review focused on the current issue of stress-shielding limitations in SLM Ti-6Al-4V owing to failures in load-bearing applications. The surface treatment and modification strategy that might improve the osseointegration of the implant were discussed. The corrosion resistance of SLM Ti-6Al-4V which could significantly affect antibacterial capability, improve cell adherence and apatite formation on the bone remodeling surface was also addressed.

Effect of doping in hydroxyapatite as coating material on biomedical implants by plasma spraying method: A review

Itishree Ratha et al.

Summary: Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is commonly used as a bioactive coating material for metallic implants in orthopedic fields due to its good biocompatibility and structural resemblance to natural bone. However, its mechanical properties can be limiting for medical applications. By using doping ions in HAp, the properties can be modified to improve mechanical and biological characteristics for enhanced implant functionality when coated by plasma spraying method.

Sputtered crystalline TiO2 film drives improved surface properties of titanium-based biomedical implants

Heloisa Navarro Pantaroto et al.

Summary: Different crystalline phases of sputtered TiO2 films were tailored to investigate their properties on titanium-based implant material. The combination of anatase and rutile structures proved to enhance corrosion protection, protein adsorption, bioactivity, and non-cytotoxicity effects. M-TiO2 showed the highest polarization resistance and increased albumin adsorption, while HA morphology was dependent on the crystalline phase.

Antibacterial metals and alloys for potential biomedical implants

Erlin Zhang et al.

Summary: Metals and alloys, such as stainless steel, titanium, cobalt alloys, have been widely used as implant materials, but implant-related infection or inflammation remains a major cause of implantation failure. Antimicrobial metals and alloys have recently attracted attention for their stable antimicrobial ability, good mechanical properties, and biocompatibility, showing promise for clinical applications.
