Mechanism of laser-chemical process to remove of oxide layer and formation of periodic microstructures for drag reduction

Qinghui Chen et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel method of combining nanosecond pulse laser ablation with chemical etching to prepare controllable periodic microstructures on stainless steel surface. The experiments demonstrated that the size and period of microstructures can be easily controlled by adjusting the laser power and scanning interval. Moreover, the thermal effect in the laser ablation process can increase the hardness and improve the hydrophobicity of the treated surface.

Effects of hot water on the wettability of superhydrophobic metal surfaces

Junyuan Huang et al.

Summary: Super-hydrophobic surfaces are widely used for various applications, but their resistance to hot water is limited. In this study, superhydrophobic metal surfaces with hierarchical micro-nano structures were prepared using nanosecond laser combined with heat treatment. The results showed that hot water immersion did not significantly change the surface structure, but increased the surface free energy and transformed the superhydrophobicity into hydrophilicity.

One-step rapid preparation of superhydrophobic peek with mechanical, and chemical stability

Junyuan Huang et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a fast and inexpensive method for preparing superhydrophobic PEEK surfaces. A micro-nano hierarchical structure can be formed on the PEEK surface through nanosecond laser processing. This surface exhibits good mechanical, chemical, high-temperature, hot-water, and high-pressure water impact stability, as well as repulsion to droplets with different pH values.

An energy-efficient pathway to turbulent drag reduction

Ivan Marusic et al.

Summary: Skin-friction drag can be decreased by oscillatory motion in the surface at high Reynolds numbers, with two distinct pathways for drag reduction identified: one involving frequencies comparable to small-scale eddies and the other involving frequencies comparable to large-scale eddies. The second pathway offers more efficient drag reduction at higher Reynolds numbers, presenting new opportunities for reducing fuel consumption and increasing power generation.

Surface Acoustic Waves to Control Droplet Impact onto Superhydrophobic and Slippery Liquid-Infused Porous Surfaces

Mehdi H. Biroun et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new method to actively control the droplet impact onto superhydrophobic and SLIPS surfaces using surface acoustic waves (SAWs). The results show that SAWs can effectively modify the impact dynamics of droplets on the surfaces by altering the oil lubricant thickness, reducing contact time, and changing rebound angles.
