Photocatalytic removal of gaseous ethanol, acetaldehyde and acetic acid: from a fundamental approach to real cases

Eleonora Pargoletti et al.

Summary: This article provides a selective overview of the current understanding of VOC photocatalytic oxidation, with a focus on ethanol, acetaldehyde, and acetic acid. It discusses the adsorption of these molecules on the photocatalyst surface, reaction intermediates, and the role of photocatalyst features in directing adsorption and oxidation phenomena. Gaps in our knowledge, such as the effect of air humidity, multi-pollutant interactions, and deactivation pathways, are critically discussed. Attempts to model VOC degradation in realistic conditions are also reviewed.

Recent advancements on the sustainable biochar based semiconducting materials for photocatalytic applications: A state of the art review

Palagiri Bhavani et al.

Summary: Researchers have highlighted the importance of renewable and sustainable energy production to address the increasing environmental pollution caused by non-renewable fossil fuels. Photocatalysis, converting abundant solar energy to solar fuels, has been proposed as an alternative solution. However, the low photocatalytic efficiency and high cost of existing catalysts have hindered commercialization. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop economically/eco-friendly, highly efficient, and robust catalysts. Introducing biochar as a support material in semiconductor-based catalysts can improve photocatalytic performance by addressing issues such as charge recombination, poor stability, and low conductivity. Recent research has demonstrated the potential of biochar-modified photocatalytic materials in applications such as hydrogen production, carbon dioxide photo-reduction, and water/air pollution treatment under solar light irradiation.

A review on synergistic coexisting pollutants for efficient photocatalytic reaction in wastewater remediation

F. F. A. Aziz et al.

Summary: With the rapid development of the economy and industry, water pollution has become increasingly serious due to the excessive chemical wastes that need to be removed via reduction or oxidation reactions. Simultaneous removal of dual pollutants through photocatalytic redox reactions has been extensively studied in the past five years as it effectively decontaminates pollutants compared to single pollutant systems. This review classifies binary pollutants selectively removed through photocatalytic reduction or oxidation according to heavy metal-organic pollutants, heavy metal-heavy metal pollutants, and organic-organic pollutants. The intrinsic relationship between pollutants is explained through three different mechanisms, and strategies for enhancing this treatment method are discussed. This review provides a recent perspective on the development of photocatalysis systems for industrial applications.

Induction of a piezo-potential improves photocatalytic hydrogen production over ZnO/ZnS/MoS2 Heterostructures

Guan-Chi Lee et al.

Summary: This study applied a piezo-potential to ZnO/ZnS/MoS2 heterostructures to enhance the separation of photoexcited electrons and holes, resulting in increased production of H2. The heterostructures were synthesized through hydrothermal synthesis, and the H2 production varied with the different mixing ratios of ZnO and MoS2. When a piezopotential was introduced through ultrasonication during the photocatalytic reaction, the rate of H2 production significantly increased due to band tilting and improved charge transfer.
