Novel Chloroflexi genomes from the deepest ocean reveal metabolic strategies for the adaptation to deep-sea habitats

Rulong Liu et al.

Summary: This study provides the first comprehensive examination of the metabolic potentials of Chloroflexi microbes in the Mariana Trench, revealing their ability to degrade a wide range of recalcitrant organic compounds, store energy, and respond to changes in nutrient conditions. These findings suggest that Chloroflexi may employ a feast-or-famine metabolic strategy to adapt to variable organic matter inputs in the deep ocean.

Metapangenomics reveals depth-dependent shifts in metabolic potential for the ubiquitous marine bacterial SAR324 lineage

Dominique Boeuf et al.

Summary: Through a study on the comparative genomics, ecology, and physiological potential of the SAR324 clade, a significant divergence in the metabolic potentials of different ecotypes living in different habitats was revealed. Ecotypes in the dark or twilight oceans shared features consistent with a sulfur-based chemolithoautotrophic lifestyle, while those in the sunlit ocean displayed a presumptive photoheterotrophic lifestyle. The results highlight the importance of metapangenomic approaches in understanding the properties and variations in function and ecological traits of specific phylogenetic clades within complex microbiomes.

Eukaryotic rather than prokaryotic microbiomes change over seasons in rewetted fen peatlands

Haitao Wang et al.

Summary: This study revealed that microbial eukaryotes mainly drive the seasonal dynamics of microbiomes in rewetted fen peatlands, with different fen types influencing eukaryotic microbiomes in unique ways.
