A multi-objective optimization approach for exploring the cost and makespan trade-off in additive manufacturing

F. Tevhide Altekin et al.

Summary: This paper addresses the production planning problem in multi-machine additive manufacturing (AM) systems by proposing a unified model that minimizes cost and makespan objectives while considering part and job assignments. Experimental results demonstrate that when identical machines are used, the trade-off between objectives is relatively small; however, when non-identical machines are used, considering both objectives simultaneously becomes important.

The collaborative batching problem in multi-site additive manufacturing

Dominik Zehetner et al.

Summary: Additive Manufacturing (AM) has the potential to disrupt supply chains, and researchers have been focused on improving its operational efficiency. Collaborative production (CP) has not been sufficiently studied in the context of AM. This study aims to close this research gap by demonstrating the impact of collaborative planning in the field of AM. The proposed approach combines mixed integer programming with Genetic Algorithms to solve the collaborative multi-site batching problem, and the results show that it can significantly decrease the overall costs of AM operations.

Summary: This paper investigates the application of additive manufacturing (AM) technology in customized production and limited human resources in the context of Industry 4.0 and the COVID-19 pandemic. It proposes a new AM scheduling problem considering unrelated parallel machines, two-dimensional packing constraints, and unequal part release times. A mixed integer linear programming model is presented to minimize the makespan, and an adaptive large neighborhood search algorithm is proposed to solve the NP-hard problem. The efficiency of the algorithm is verified using different datasets, and insights on the effects of release times and orientation selection are discussed.

Summary: This research focuses on the scheduling and nesting problem in additive manufacturing, aiming to minimize total delay of parts and maximize the use rate of machines. Two models for estimating production time are proposed using mixed linear programming. A heuristic approach is developed to solve large instances, providing better solutions within a reasonable time. The heuristic performances are evaluated on large instances by comparing with lower bounds obtained by relaxing the model, showing solutions found are near to the proposed lower bounds.
