Multiferroic van der Waals heterostructure FeCl2/Sc2CO2: Nonvolatile electrically switchable electronic and spintronic properties

Liemao Cao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the electronic and transport properties of multiferroic van der Waals heterostructures composed of FeCl2 and Sc2CO2. The results show that the heterostructure can be switched from a semiconductor to a half-metal by modulating the ferroelectric polarization states. The findings demonstrate the potential of these heterostructures for compact information processing, data storage, and spintronics devices.

Boosting the photocatalytic H2 evolution activity of type-II g-GaN/Sc2CO2 van der Waals heterostructure using applied biaxial strain and external electric field

Francis Opoku et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel 2D g-GaN/Sc2CO2 heterostructure was designed and investigated as a potential solar-driven photocatalyst for water splitting. The results showed that g-GaN and Sc2CO2 can form a stable vdW heterostructure with suitable band alignment. The heterostructure exhibited thermal and dynamic stability and showed improved optical absorption compared to individual g-GaN and Sc2CO2 monolayers. Tunable electronic and structural properties were achieved by varying the electric field and biaxial strain, with compressive strain and negative electric field being more effective for promoting hydrogen production. Overall, this research provides strategies to enhance the performance of MXene-based heterojunction photocatalysts in solar harvesting and optoelectronic devices.

Nonvolatile Controlling Valleytronics by Ferroelectricity in 2H-VSe2/Sc2CO2 van der Waals Heterostructure

Chengan Lei et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the nonvolatile control of 2D valleytronics by introducing a ferroelectric-aided layer, achieving electrical reversible control of valleytronics in a 2H-VSe2/Sc2CO2 van der Waals heterostructure through the application of a short-term voltage. This provides a promising strategy for achieving nonvolatile control of valleytronics at the nanoscale and helps design novel controllable devices.

Synthesis and Properties of Monolayer MnSe with Unusual Atomic Structure and Antiferromagnetic Ordering

Markus Aapro et al.

Summary: Transition metal chalcogenides are a family of 2D materials currently of high interest, with monolayer manganese selenide synthesized successfully on a NbSe2 substrate showing unique magnetic and electronic properties. The structure resembles that of CuI or a buckled bilayer of h-BN. Experimental results indicate that the monolayer is antiferromagnetic with an unusual out-of-plane ordering.

Transformation of CrSe Monolayers into Room-Temperature Half Metals via Chemical Edge Modification

Lei Ji et al.

Summary: The study reveals the transformation of 2D CrSe monolayer derivatives into FM half metals, as well as the maintenance of FM half metal properties even when surfaces are saturated with chemical groups. Furthermore, Monte Carlo simulations show an enhancement of Curie temperature of the CrSe monolayer derivatives to around 530 K, indicating great potential for application in the spintronics industry.

Two-dimensional magnetic transition metal chalcogenides

Yu Li Huang et al.

Summary: In recent years, the field of two-dimensional magnets has rapidly expanded, with two-dimensional transition metal chalcogenides exhibiting novel properties including magnetism. Significant progress has been made in experimental growth of magnetic two-dimensional TMC materials, with demonstrations of intrinsic and extrinsic ferromagnetism in some materials. The paper also briefly discusses the origin of exotic magnetic properties and emergent phenomena.

Distinctive magnetic properties of CrI3 and CrBr3 monolayers caused by spin-orbit coupling

C. Bacaksiz et al.

Summary: Significant differences in magnetic anisotropy, Curie temperature, hysteresis in an external magnetic field, and evolution of magnetism with strain were found between the CrI3 and CrBr3 magnetic monolayers, predominantly attributed to a distinctly different interplay of atomic contributions to spin-orbit coupling in the two materials.
