Imaging an Acoustic Topological Edge Mode on a Patterned Substrate with

Y. Nii et al.

Summary: We investigated the acoustic topological edge modes in a honeycomb phononic crystal consisting of metallic nanopillars on a LiNbO3 substrate. Our acoustic band calculations demonstrated that the topological surface acoustic wave (SAW) mode could be found at the edge of the honeycomb phononic crystal despite the hybridization with internal acoustic modes of the substrate. By using pulse-type microwave impedance microscopy, we were able to visualize the gigahertz topological edge mode between two mutually inverted topological phononic crystals. The frequency-dependent image revealed that the edge mode evolved as the bulk SAW modes were suppressed due to the formation of an energy gap, which was consistent with its topological nature. This realization of a topological waveguide in a simple pillar structure on a substrate has the potential to open up new avenues for the development of topological SAW devices with various applications such as quantum computing, sensing, and communication.

Visualization of acoustic power flow in suspended thin-film lithium niobate phononic devices

Daehun Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, gigahertz-frequency acoustic waves in lithium niobate phononic circuits were directly visualized and primary propagation parameters were measured using transmission-mode microwave impedance microscopy. By using a fast Fourier transform, forward and backward propagating waves were separately analyzed and propagation loss was quantitatively evaluated. This work provides valuable information for designing and optimizing phononic devices for microwave signal processing.
