Benchmarking Noise and Dephasing in Emerging Electrical Materials for Quantum Technologies

Saurav Islam et al.

Summary: As quantum technologies advance, a specific class of electrically conducting materials are gaining significant interest due to their importance in quantum-enabled elements and circuitry. The phase coherence of these emerging materials is crucial for quantum architectures. Evaluating both dephasing and noise is necessary for quantum applications, and this article reviews available data on magnetotransport and low-frequency fluctuations in electrical conductivity to benchmark these properties.

Weak localization effect in Zn1-xCdxO/CdO heterostructures

L. M. B. Vargas et al.

Summary: We systematically investigated the morphology and magnetotransport properties of Zn1-xCdxO/CdO heterostructures by changing the x values between 0.50 and 0.95. The disorder degree was found to be correlated with the amplitude of the negative magnetoresistance and the dominant inelastic scattering mechanisms. All heterostructures showed a negative amplitude in magnetoresistance measurements, indicating the presence of weak localization effect at low temperatures. Using the three-dimensional weak localization theory (Kawabata 3D), we determined a relatively large phase coherence length (up to 135 nm at 4.2 K) for the Zn0.05Cd0.95O/CdO heterostructure.

Low temperature photoluminescence study for identification of intersubband energy levels inside triangular quantum well of AlGaN/GaN heterostructure

R. K. Kaneriya et al.

Summary: A non-destructive method for extracting the true signatures of intersubband energy level states inside a single triangular quantum well for AlGaN/GaN heterostructure is presented. The experiments show the interaction between high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) and light, and confirm the interband transition from 2DEG subbands to the valence band.

Thickness dependence of quantum transport in the topological superconductor candidate SnTaS2

Mengcheng Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the thickness dependence of magnetotransport properties in mechanically exfoliated topological superconductor candidate SnTaS2. The superconducting transition temperature Tc is gradually suppressed and becomes undetectable when the thickness is comparable to the superconducting coherence length. The increased disorder with decreasing thickness is expected to play an important role in the suppressed Tc. Additionally, a distinct weak antilocalization effect is observed in SnTaS2 nanoflakes, and the temperature-dependent phase coherence length agrees with strong electron-phonon scattering in the sample.

Influence of AlN spacer and GaN cap layer in GaN heterostructure for RF HEMT applications

R. K. Kaneriya et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of GaN cap layer and AlN spacer layer on the properties of GaN heterostructure, including mobility, carrier concentration, bandgap, crystal structure, inherent strain, and stress. The results show that the incorporation of AlN spacer layer increases the inherent tensile stress and carrier concentration, while the addition of GaN cap layer enhances carrier mobility.

Extension of on-chip thermometry of metal strips toward sub-10 K regime

Jiabin Qiao et al.

Summary: One widely employed method to study thermoelectric effects in nano- and mesoscopic systems is by utilizing on-chip metal strips. However, the standard technique loses sensitivity in the sub-Kelvin temperature regime because the resistance of metal strips saturates. Here, we report a possible solution that can extend the working point from the conventional window (10 to 300 K) down to temperatures below 10 K.

Weak antilocalization effect and multi-channel transport in SnTe quantum well

S. de Castro et al.

Summary: In this study, magnetoresistance measurements were performed on a SnTe quantum well to investigate the weak antilocalization effect arising from the strong spin-orbit coupling. The analysis of the experimental data using the Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka equation revealed that the effect is not purely 2D but composed of both 2D and 3D channels within the quantum well structure.

In situ tunable giant electrical anisotropy in a grating gated AlGaN/GaN two-dimensional electron gas

Ting-Ting Wang et al.

Summary: Materials with in-plane electrical anisotropy have great potential for artificial synaptic devices. However, natural materials with strong intrinsic in-plane electrical anisotropy are rare. We introduce a simple strategy to produce extremely large electrical anisotropy via grating gating of a semiconductor two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) of AlGaN/GaN. Our semiconductor device with controllable giant electrical anisotropy will stimulate new device applications.

Phonon-induced exciton weak localization in two-dimensional semiconductors

M. M. Glazov et al.

Summary: This study theoretically investigates the contribution of quantum effects to the exciton diffusion coefficient in atomically thin crystals. The weak localization caused by the interference of excitonic wavefunctions on closed loop trajectories plays a significant role, even when the excitons are scattered by long-wavelength acoustic phonons. The study identifies the regimes where the weak localization effect is particularly pronounced and briefly addresses the role of free charge carriers in exciton quantum transport and higher-order weak localization effects within the self-consistent theory of localization.

GaN-based power devices: Physics, reliability, and perspectives

Matteo Meneghini et al.

Summary: Gallium nitride (GaN) has emerged as an excellent material for power devices, offering advantages such as high-speed/high-voltage and low switching losses. The use of AlGaN/GaN heterostructures allows for the creation of a two-dimensional electron gas with high mobility and large channel density. Research is focusing on vertical device architectures and three-dimensional structures, like fin-shaped, trench-structured, and nanowire-based structures, which show great potential for high power/high-voltage operation.

Weak localization and dimensional crossover in compositionally graded AlxGa1-xN

Athby Al-Tawhid et al.

Summary: Studying the interaction between itinerant carriers, lattice dynamics, and defects in compositionally and strain-graded AlGaN heterostructures grown on AlN substrates reveals a dimensional crossover with increasing temperature. These heterostructures exhibit robust polarization-induced 3D electron gas and metallic-like behavior at low temperatures, while negative longitudinal magnetoresistance and weak localization effects are observed. Our observations provide a clear and detailed picture of two distinct localization mechanisms affecting carrier transport at low temperatures.

Interface roughness governed negative magnetoresistances in two-dimensional electron gases in AlGaN/GaN heterostructures

Ting-Ting Wang et al.

Summary: The study reports on NMRs in the 2DEG in AlGaN/GaN heterostructures, aiming to uncover their origins through electric field gating. NMRs were observed over a wide range of temperatures from 3 to 170 K, with interface roughness scattering identified as playing a crucial role in obtaining large NMRs. The results demonstrate that electric field gating not only allows for tuning the values of NMRs, but also reveals their underlying mechanisms.
