Review of thermal transport in phononic crystals

Masahiro Nomura et al.

Summary: Thermal transport at the nanoscale level has attracted attention due to its physically interesting features such as the behavior of phonons and its potential applications in heat dissipation problems. Researchers have studied the thermal transport properties of various nanostructured materials, including phononic crystals. Phononic crystals provide a well-defined platform for investigating thermal transport. Controlling thermal transport through interference is also an interesting aspect.

Design of thermal lens phononic nanostructure to generate tunable hotspots using quasi-ballistic phonon transport

Jincui Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the guidance of quasi-ballistic thermal flow propagation using direct passages between holes in silicon phononic nanostructures. By designing a radial array of holes that converge at a focal point, a quasi-ballistic thermal lens nanostructure can be created, generating an ellipse-shaped hotspot away from the holes. The intensity and size of the hotspot can be controlled by varying the geometrical features of the thermal lens nanostructure. These findings provide guidelines for designing thermal lens nanostructures capable of producing on-demand hotspot properties and manipulating quasi-ballistic thermal flow.

Engineering thermal transport within Si thin films: The impact of nanoslot alignment and ion implantation

Sien Wang et al.

Summary: Nanoporous Si films have potential applications in thermoelectrics and thermal management of devices. Offset nanoslot patterns achieve smaller characteristic lengths and lower thermal conductivity compared to periodic circular pores. Additional reduction in thermal conductivity can be achieved by implanting Ga ions.

Review of coherent phonon and heat transport control in one-dimensional phononic crystals at nanoscale

Roman Anufriev et al.

Summary: Phononic crystals manipulate phonon transport through phonon interference in periodic structures and have found applications in microscale optomechanical devices. The reduction of thermal conductivity in 1D phononic crystals predicted by theoretical works is not consistently observed, with most evidence suggesting incoherent heat conduction at room temperature.
