ZnO nanoparticles coated and stearic acid modified superhydrophobic chitosan film for self-cleaning and oil-water separation

Mengting Yu et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to create superhydrophobic chitosan films by coating them with zinc oxide nanoparticles and hydrophobic modification with stearic acid. A superhydrophobic film with a contact angle of 156 degrees was achieved by using a 1% concentration of zinc oxide nanoparticles and a 1% concentration of stearic acid, which was due to the combination of micro/nano-level hierarchical structure and low surface energy modification. The superhydrophobic chitosan film demonstrated excellent acid, alkali, heat, and UV stability, as well as a 14.4% reduction in light transmittance at 354 nm. It also exhibited remarkable self-cleaning and oil-water separation performance. Our findings will broaden the application of chitosan films in areas such as food packaging, outdoor self-cleaning materials, and oil-water separations.

Solvent-free fabrication of tough self-crosslinkable short-fluorinated copolymer nanocoatings for ultradurable superhydrophobic fabrics

Junli Shao et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the fabrication of self-crosslinkable poly(perfluorohexylethyl acrylate-co-isocyanato ethyl methacrylate) nanocoating with good dynamic water repellency and high mechanical strength using a solvent-free initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD) method. The coating enabled superhydrophobicity of different fabrics and showed excellent durability after various harsh tests, attributed to enhanced adhesion strength and mechanical properties. This work paves the way towards eco-friendly fabrication of durable superhydrophobic fabrics.

A protective superhydrophobic Mg-Zn-Al LDH film on Surface-Alloyed Magnesium

Yi-Xing Zhu et al.

Summary: A novel method was developed to fabricate a protective superhydrophobic LDH film on a Zn-Al alloyed surface of AZ31 Mg alloy. The film provided corrosion and mechanical protection for the substrate magnesium alloy, while additional modification allowed for changing the surface properties to super-hydrophobicity. Experimentally verified long-term anti-corrosion performance, super-hydrophobicity, wear resistance, chemical stability, and adhesion strength of the modified LDH film.
