Development and Laboratory Simulation Tests of Anti-skidding Ice Melting Cushion with Carbon Fibers for Pavement

Xudong Zha et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on ice processing and snow melting on urban pavement in South China during winter, especially in emergency situations. A carbon fiber electrothermal cushion was developed to improve skid resistance and melt ice and snow on the pavement surface, ensuring driving safety. Lab tests showed that the cushion has stable heating ability, fast heating speed, and a melting rate of 78.7% per hour. It also achieves excellent skid resistance and interlayer friction performance. The cushion is recommended to be placed on the pavement directly, without interrupting traffic, and has low cost and good durability.

Enhancing the compressive strength of thermal energy storage concrete containing a low-temperature phase change material using silica fume and multiwalled carbon nanotubes

Muhammad Zeeshan Haider et al.

Summary: In this study, a structural functional thermal energy storage concrete (TESC) containing Tetradecane as a low-temperature PCM was developed. The inclusion of PCM-LWAs in concrete resulted in a significant decrease in strength, which was mitigated by the addition of silica fume and multiwalled carbon nanotubes. The SEM and XRD results confirmed that the addition of SF/MWCNTs led to a denser microstructure and increased growth of C-S-H, improving the mechanical performance of the TESC containing PCM-LWAs.

Snow-melting pavement design strategy with electric cable heating system balancing snow melting, energy conservation, and mechanical performance

Xingyi Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigated comprehensive energy conservation design strategies for the electric cable heating (ECH) system, considering snow-melting, energy consumption, and mechanical response using the finite element method. A recommended design strategy was proposed based on simulation results, reducing energy waste while ensuring snow-melting function. Field experiments verified the long-term mechanical performance of the ECH system designed using the developed strategy, with all test sections showing rutting depths less than 3 mm after 400,000 loading cycles.

Regions of intensification of extreme snowfall under future warming

Lennart Quante et al.

Summary: This passage discusses the impact of climate change on the frequency and intensity of snowfall, highlighting that extreme snowfall events are expected to intensify across large areas of the Northern Hemisphere in the next few decades due to global warming. This is likely to pose challenges for municipalities in mid to high latitudes.
