Polydopamine mediator for glucose oxidation reaction and its use for membraneless enzymatic biofuel cells

Jungyeon Ji et al.

Summary: Polydopamine (PDA) is used as a biocompatible mediator for fabricating glucose oxidase (GOx) based bioanode of enzymatic biofuel cells (EBFCs). Through the autoxidation and polymerization of dopamine monomer, spherical PDA particles are well synthesized, and their chemical and optical characteristics are verified. The durability of the bioanode is improved by introducing polyethyleneimine (PEI) as a catalyst, which effectively suppresses the leaching out of PDA and GO(x) molecules. The suggested new catalyst shows better performance and higher power density in EBFC.

Summary: Non-enzymatic electrochemical detection of bilirubin has been demonstrated using chemically functionalized toray carbon fiber electrode. The functionalized TC electrode showed a wide linear concentration range, better sensitivity, and lower limit of detection for BR sensor. The sensor exhibited higher selectivity towards BR at physiological concentration.

Enzymatic Biofuel Cell: Opportunities and Intrinsic Challenges in Futuristic Applications

Linlin Wang et al.

Summary: Enzymatic biofuel cells (EBFCs) are recognized as sustainable energy sources due to the use of renewable enzyme biocatalysts and fuels, with applications in implantable energy supply devices and self-powered biosensors garnering global attention. However, challenges such as low efficiency, poor durability, and difficulties in miniaturization hinder the transition from fundamental research to practical application. The full potential and future prospects of EBFCs-based applications are still being explored despite these obstacles.
