Early fatigue damage accumulation of CFRP Cross-Ply laminates considering size and stress level effects

Xi Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of ply-block size and stress level on the accumulation of transverse cracks and delamination during the early fatigue life of CFRP laminates. Tension-tension fatigue tests were conducted under different stress levels for two cross-ply configurations. In-situ damage monitoring using digital cameras, digital image correlation, and acoustic emission techniques was employed. The results show that the interaction between transverse cracks and delamination varies with different ply configurations, and Poisson's ratio and cumulative AE energy can be used as indicators for evaluating early fatigue damage.

Bio-inspired composite laminate design with improved out-of-plane strength and ductility

A. Melaibari et al.

Summary: To improve the flexural response of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composite laminates, discontinuities were created in the microstructure by using bioinspired design, to activate additional energy dissipation mechanisms by imposing embedded defects and delaminations. Optimized bio-inspired laminates showed higher strength, failure strain, and energy absorption ability, with a metal-like failure mode that provides early warning of final failure.
