Summary: Redox processes play a crucial role in synthetic methods involving electrochemistry and photoredox catalysis. Both approaches offer access to high energy intermediates that allow for unconventional bond formations. However, while they provide similar intermediates, electrochemistry and photoredox catalysis differ in their physical chemistry principles. New insight into photodegradation mechanisms, kinetics and health effects of p-nitrophenol by ozonation in polluted water

Ning Wang et al.

Summary: Theoretical calculation was used to investigate the aqueous-phase decomposition process of p-NP initiated by O-3, proposing possible reaction pathways for the oxidative degradation. Results show that ozone can completely initiate the oxidation of p-NP under natural conditions, but at a slower rate compared to the reaction by OH center dot. Under UV radiation, dissolved ozone interacts with water to produce active radicals that significantly improve the removal efficiency of p-NP.

Exponential Amplification Using Photoredox Autocatalysis

Seunghyeon Kim et al.

Summary: The study presents a new exponential amplification strategy based on photoredox autocatalysis, where a stable photocatalyst eosin Y activates a nonfluorescent eosin Y derivative EYH3- under green light, achieving efficient autocatalytic amplification. By reducing the rate of EYH3- degradation, successful improvement of EYH3-to-eosin Y recovery was achieved, enabling sensitive visual detection of analytes. Additionally, the method was applied in developing bioassays for detection of biomarkers, including the SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein, an antigen used in COVID-19 diagnosis.
