Selective Photoelectrocatalytic Glycerol Oxidation to Dihydroxyacetone via Enhanced Middle Hydroxyl Adsorption over aBi2O3-Incorporated Catalyst

Lan Luo et al.

Summary: This study reports a photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) glycerol oxidation method for the production of dihydroxyacetone (DHA) with enhanced selectivity. A heterogeneous photoanode consisting of Bi2O3 nanoparticles on TiO2 nanorod arrays was used, and the selectivity of DHA was increased. Experimental and theoretical studies revealed the interaction between the catalyst and glycerol, as well as the parallel pathways of the reaction. Furthermore, a self-powered PEC system was designed, achieving high productivity of DHA and H2.

Mediating the Oxidizing Capability of Surface-Bound Hydroxyl Radicals Produced by Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation to Convert Glycerol into Dihydroxyacetone

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a ternary photoanode material was developed for the selective oxidation of glycerol to 1,3-dihydroxyacetone. The photoanode showed high selectivity and kinetic response, with hydroxyl radicals generated by water oxidation playing a dominant role as active oxygen species. The oxidation product obtained mainly came from water. The role of different components in enhancing the selectivity and catalyzing the reaction was revealed through spectroscopic and computational studies.

Summary: The study demonstrates a microfluidic photoelectrochemical architecture with enhanced efficiency and selectivity for solar-chemical synthesis. The efficient charge separation leads to a 3-fold enhancement in product yield and a typical reaction selectivity of 85%, which is significantly higher than conventional methods. Integration of the microfluidic photoanode with an oxygen reduction cathode results in a self-sustained photocatalytic fuel cell with remarkably high open circuit voltage and short-circuit current.

Electrochemical Oxidation of Glycerol to Dihydroxyacetone in Borate Buffer: Enhancing Activity and Selectivity by Borate-Polyol Coordination Chemistry

Xin Huang et al.

Summary: Selective electrochemical oxidation of glycerol can improve the environmental impact and economic feasibility of biodiesel production, while generating valuable C-3 chemicals. Coordination of borate ions with polyol molecules enhances the activity and selectivity of electrocatalysts, leading to high production of C-3 chemicals. This strategy could potentially be applied to a wide range of biomass-derived sugars and polyols for producing value-added chemicals on low-cost non-noble metal electrocatalysts.
