Microbiological and toxicological hazard assessment in a waste sorting plant and proper respiratory protection

Justyna Szulc et al.

Summary: This study conducted a comprehensive assessment of microbiological and toxicological hazards at workstations in a waste sorting plant and developed guidelines for selecting filtering respiratory protective devices. The research revealed high microbial contamination in the facility, with potentially hazardous microorganisms and metabolites present. A flowchart for selecting respiratory protective devices based on completed tests was proposed to help determine the appropriate equipment for workers in such environments.

Health symptoms and inflammatory blood biomarkers from exposure of recyclable waste workers to particulate matter and bioaerosols

Caroline Fernanda Hei Wikuats et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between exposure to particulate matter and bioaerosols with health symptoms and inflammatory blood biomarkers in workers at a Materials Recycling Facility in Brazil. The results suggest that exposure to PM2.5, PM10, bacteria, and fungi may increase the risk of respiratory, circulatory, and allergy symptoms among these workers. Blood samples showed lower levels of IFN-gamma in the exposed group compared to the control group. Overall, the study provides a fairly accurate assessment of air quality and health problems for MRF workers.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the exposure of urban waste collectors and drivers to inhalable bioaerosols and assess their health risk. The findings suggest that waste workers may be exposed to high concentrations of bacteria, endotoxins, and fungi during collection, posing potential health risks.

Review of biological risks associated with the collection of municipal wastes

Anne Mette Madsen et al.

Summary: The management of household waste has shifted towards waste sorting in many countries, resulting in lower collection frequency for certain waste fractions. This change can lead to increased growth of microorganisms before collection, potentially increasing exposure to bioaerosols for waste collection workers. Exposure levels to fungi, bacteria, and endotoxin vary across countries and waste types, with factors such as ventilation, cleaning, and waste handling methods affecting exposure levels. The occupational exposure to bioaerosols can lead to health issues such as gastrointestinal problems, eye and skin irritation, and reduced lung function, highlighting the importance of implementing measures to reduce exposure in the waste collection industry.

Soil depth matters: shift in composition and inter-kingdom co-occurrence patterns of microorganisms in forest soils

Sunil Mundra et al.

Summary: This study found that soil depth plays a significant role in influencing the composition and co-occurrence patterns of microbial communities. The physiochemical gradient associated with soil depth leads to distinct variations in microbial diversity and biomass, indicating a strong impact on biotic interactions in different forest soil layers.
