Use and Evaluation of a pES213-Derived Plasmid for the Constitutive Expression of gfp Protein in Pathogenic Vibrios: a Tagging Tool for In Vitro Studies

William A. Norfolk et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates and evaluates the effectiveness of pVSV102 plasmid as a tool for tagging Vibrio and related species. The results show that pVSV102 is a stable GFP plasmid that can be used to tag a broad range of vibrios and enable easy differentiation within complex mixtures of cells.

Coral mucus rapidly induces chemokinesis and genome-wide transcriptional shifts toward early pathogenesis in a bacterial coral pathogen

Cherry Gao et al.

Summary: Research has shown that V. coralliilyticus exhibits a strong and rapid chemokinetic behavioral response upon exposure to coral mucus, accompanied by rapid differential expression of 53% of genes. Within 10 minutes of mucus exposure, genes related to quorum sensing and nutrient metabolism were upregulated, while after 60 minutes, genes associated with virulence were upregulated, potentially causing coral tissue damage and algal symbiont photoinactivation.

Global decline in capacity of coral reefs to provide ecosystem services

Tyler D. Eddy et al.

Summary: The global coverage of coral reefs has declined significantly in recent decades, with fishery catches peaking in 2002 and subsequently decreasing, along with a reduction in biodiversity. These environmental impacts may threaten communities relying on coral reef ecosystem services.

Microscale tracking of coral-vibrio interactions

Assaf R. Gavish et al.

Summary: This study provides a dynamic microscopic view of the interaction between a coral pathogen and its host, showcasing how infection may occur through ingestion or colonization. Despite high bacterial loads, some coral fragments did not develop symptoms, while others exhibited extensive damage and necrosis of polyps. Biochemical and microbial analyses during symptomatic infections revealed an increase in metalloprotease activity and bacterial counts, elucidating the complex interactions underlying coral disease.
