Bacterial volatile organic compounds induce adverse ultrastructural changes and DNA damage to the sugarcane pathogenic fungus Thielaviopsis ethacetica

Carla Sant Anna Freitas et al.

Summary: It has been demonstrated that microbial volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be used as antagonists against phytopathogens, inhibiting their growth and potentially leading to cell death. This alternative approach to agrochemicals is considered sustainable and eco-friendly.

Pythium myriotylum Is Recovered Most Frequently from Pythium Soft Rot-Infected Ginger Rhizomes in China

Paul Daly et al.

Summary: This study identified and analyzed the Pythiumspecies associated with Pythium soft rot of ginger in China, and found that P. myriotylum was the major pathogen, with differences between Chinese and Australian isolates of P. myriotylum. Additionally, the study analyzed the growth ability, disease severity on ginger plants, and aggressiveness of colonization on ginger rhizome sticks of the isolates, and found variations in these characteristics.

Pythium oligandrum in plant protection and growth promotion: Secretion of hydrolytic enzymes, elicitors and tryptamine as auxin precursor

Katerina Belonoznikova et al.

Summary: This article reviews the positive effects of Pythium oligandrum as a biocontrol agent, focusing on its biochemical processes and effects on plants. P. oligandrum degrades host cell wall polysaccharides, competes for nutrients and space, and enhances plant defense mechanisms, resulting in better plant responses to pathogen attacks. Additionally, P. oligandrum promotes plant health through the production of secondary metabolites and the promotion of plant growth.

Summary: Conventional synthetic fungicides cause harm to the environment and human health, making the biological control of post-harvest fruit and vegetable diseases more attractive. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been proven effective for post-harvest disease management, serving as the predominant antifungal mechanism of antagonistic microorganisms.

Genome of Pythium myriotylum Uncovers an Extensive Arsenal of Virulence-Related Genes among the Broad-Host-Range Necrotrophic Pythium Plant Pathogens

Paul Daly et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the necrotrophic Pythium myriotylum has a larger number of virulence factor-related genes compared to other Pythium plant pathogens. The genome and transcriptome analysis show that gene expansion of virulence factor-related genes plays a bigger role in the plant parasitism of Pythium spp., providing insights for the management of P. myriotylum-caused disease.

Volatile organic compounds produced by Aureobasidium pullulans induce electrolyte loss and oxidative stress in Botrytis cinerea and Alternaria alternata

Sashika M. Yalage Don et al.

Summary: The yeast-like fungus Aureobasidium pullulans produces volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with antifungal properties, which can trigger the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and electrolyte leakage in microorganisms. Exposure to these VOCs alters cell wall structures of fungal mycelia and inhibits fungal growth.

Volatile Organic Compound-Mediated Antifungal Activity of Pichia spp. and Its Effect on the Metabolic Profiles of Fermentation Communities

Hongxia Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by Pichia during baijiu fermentation have antifungal effects on Monascus purpureus, particularly 2-phenylethanol. The inhibition of fungal growth by 2-phenylethanol may be attributed to its interference with protein synthesis and DNA damage. Overall, the results suggest that Pichia plays a role in antagonizing fungal blooms in the fermentation process, potentially improving the quality of baijiu.

Volatile Organic Compound from Trichoderma asperelloides TSU1: Impact on Plant Pathogenic Fungi

On-Uma Ruangwong et al.

Summary: In this study, a soil fungus Trichoderma asperelloides TSU1 was isolated from flamingo flower cultivated soil and demonstrated to exhibit antifungal activity by producing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that inhibit the growth of fungal pathogens. Through solid-phase microextraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis, it was found that the VOCs of T. asperelloides TSU1 contained compounds like fluoro(trinitro)methane and 2-phenylethanol, which showed significant antifungal properties. This research highlights the potential of T. asperelloides TSU1 as a biocontrol agent for plant diseases through the production of VOCs.

Dual-Transcriptomic, Microscopic, and Biocontrol Analyses of the Interaction Between the Bioeffector Pythium oligandrum and the Pythium Soft-Rot of Ginger Pathogen Pythium myriotylum

Paul Daly et al.

Summary: Biological control is a promising method to suppress diseases caused by Pythium spp., with studies showing that a new isolate of P. oligandrum could antagonize the pathogen P. myriotylum. The interaction between these two species resulted in significant changes in gene expression, indicating a predatory interaction. Despite the host's defensive strategy response, P. oligandrum demonstrated strong control over soft-rot of ginger caused by P. myriotylum, making it a promising biocontrol agent. Dual-RNAseq approach highlighted features of a defensive response by the pathogen and suggested factors that may impact the success and durability of biological control methods.
