Assessment of helicopter passengers' vibration discomfort: proposal for improvement of the ISO 2631-1 standard

Laurianne Delcor et al.

Summary: The study confirmed the validity of the ISO 2631-1 standard in assessing discomfort caused by vibrations in helicopters and proposed a new discomfort index that takes into account amplitude modulations, which can improve the prediction of subjective assessments.

Assessment of in-cabin noise of wide-body aircrafts

Heow Pueh Lee et al.

Summary: The aviation industry has experienced rapid growth, but has been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Assessing aircraft cabin noise is crucial for long-haul flights. This study recorded the cabin noise of five wide-body aircraft using a smartphone application and found that Airbus A380-800 had the lowest noise level, while Airbus A350-900 had the highest noise level.

Model of sound and vibration discomfort in helicopter cabins

Laurianne Delcor et al.

Summary: Noise and vibrations in helicopter cabins are major sources of discomfort. Helicopter manufacturers are trying to estimate passenger discomfort by measuring these factors. Research has shown that noise discomfort is affected by perceived intensity, and an acoustic comfort equation has been established to describe the comfort of noise. A series of tests has also been conducted to estimate the global discomfort caused by simultaneous noise and vibrations. This study has created a global discomfort equation, which shows similar contributions from both sources, but with an interaction that reduces comfort when one source is dominant.

Human Comfort Model of Noise and Vibration for Sustainable Design of the Turboprop Aircraft Cabin

Geetika Aggarwal et al.

Summary: The aircraft industry has seen significant technological advancements in recent years, particularly in fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. However, turboprop aircraft, which offer improved fuel efficiency, tend to have noisier and more vibration-prone cabins, leading to increased discomfort for passengers. This research aims to build a comfort model for aircraft that can help optimize the design and improve passengers' traveling experience. The study found that higher levels of noise and vibration result in increased overall discomfort, and a linear comfort model was developed for predicting discomfort based on turboprop noise and vibration measurements.

Influence of Seat Vibration Frequency on Total Annoyance and Interaction Effects Caused by Simultaneous Noise and Seat Vibrations in Commercial Vehicles

Maria Mareen Maravich et al.

Summary: This article investigates the impact of noise and seat vibrations on drivers, as well as the interaction between them. The results suggest that the assessment of overall annoyance in vehicle situations should take into account the interaction effect between noise and vibration.

Whole-Body Vibration Experienced by Pilots, Passengers and Crew in Fixed-Wing Aircraft: A State-of-the-Science Review

Neil J. Mansfield et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the literature on whole-body vibration in aircraft and highlights the lack of consistency in measurement methods and analysis. Despite this, measurements show that there are significant components of vibration at frequencies attenuated by standard filters, indicating their importance for human perception. Propeller aircraft in particular exhibit strong tonal vibration components, and flight phase also has a significant effect on vibration exposure. Further studies are recommended to enhance understanding of in-flight experiences and optimize human health, wellbeing, comfort, and performance.
