Risk Factors for Recurrent Staphylococcus aureus Bacteremia

Seong-Ho Choi et al.

Summary: This study identified several risk factors for R-SAB, with the highest risk observed among black hemodialysis patients. Higher levels of RANTES in R-SAB compared to matched controls suggest a need for further investigation.

Targeting the bacterial SOS response for new antimicrobial agents: drug targets, molecular mechanisms and inhibitors

Thomas Lanyon-Hogg

Summary: The review explores the role of the bacterial SOS pathway in combating drug-resistant pathogens, potential targets for inhibition such as AddAB, RecBCD, RecA, and LexA, and efforts to develop selective small-molecule inhibitors. These inhibitors may serve as valuable tools for combating drug resistance and developing novel antibacterial therapeutics.

Reactive Oxygen Species in Pathogen Clearance: The Killing Mechanisms, the Adaption Response, and the Side Effects

Hao Li et al.

Summary: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play key roles in antibiotic-mediated killing and host-mediated killing, but their involvement presents challenges and complexities. Certain bacterial pathogens thriving under ROS conditions suggest the need to focus on pathogen evolution to adapt to ROS.

SOS-Independent Pyocin Production in P. aeruginosa Is Induced by XerC Recombinase Deficiency

Nina S. Baggett et al.

Summary: Pyocins are used by Pseudomonas aeruginosa to compete with other strains, typically induced by DNA damage and the SOS response. Our discovery of a RecA-independent pathway for strong pyocin induction in XerC-deficient cells highlights a potential target for future therapies against P. aeruginosa infections.

RexAB Promotes the Survival of Staphylococcus aureus Exposed to Multiple Classes of Antibiotics

Rebecca S. Clarke et al.

Summary: Antibiotics inhibit bacterial growth and lead to cell death, while certain antibiotics can also induce the production of reactive oxygen species that damage bacterial DNA and promote drug resistance. Different classes of antibiotics were found to dose-dependently induce the SOS response in Staphylococcus aureus, indicating DNA damage, with the RexAB helicase/nuclease complex playing a key role in this process. This study confirms that several classes of antibiotics cause DNA damage in S. aureus and highlights the importance of RexAB in triggering the mutagenic SOS response and promoting bacterial survival.

DNA Repair in Staphylococcus aureus

Kam Pou Ha et al.

Summary: Staphylococcus aureus demonstrates remarkable adaptability and resistance in infections, with its DNA repair process playing a crucial role in pathogen survival within host tissues. Studies suggest that targeting staphylococcal DNA repair could be a potential novel therapeutic strategy.
