Locoregionally Recurrent Colon Cancer: How Far Have We Come? A Population-Based, Retrospective Cohort Study

Hidde Swartjes et al.

Summary: This study provides an overview of the incidence, risk factors, treatment, and overall survival of patients with locoregionally recurrent colon cancer (LRCC) after curative resection of primary colon cancer. The study found a low cumulative incidence of LRCC, and adjuvant chemotherapy was associated with a decreased risk of LRCC among high-risk patients. Patients who received curative-intent treatment had a high overall survival.

Metabolic positron emission tomography/CT response after induction chemotherapy and chemo(re)irradiation is associated with higher negative resection margin rate in patients with locally recurrent rectal cancer

Desley M. G. Van Zoggel et al.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the correlation between PET/CT response and final histopathological outcomes in locally recurrent rectal cancer patients. The results showed that PET/CT response was a significant predictor of the negative resection margin rate, and had some consistency with the histopathological TRG categories.

Locally recurrent rectal cancer: oncological outcomes with different treatment strategies in two tertiary referral units

Stefi Nordkamp et al.

Summary: No standard of care has been defined in the treatment of locally recurrent rectal cancer due to its heterogeneous nature, low incidence, and varied treatment options. This study compared data from two tertiary hospitals and found that aiming for wide resection margins increased the R0 resection rate and local re-recurrence-free survival. Neoadjuvant full-course chemoradiotherapy improved survival, while reirradiation showed no benefit.

Impact of a history of metastases or synchronous metastases on survival in patients with locally recurrent rectal cancer

E. L. K. Voogt et al.

Summary: LRRC patients with a history of curatively treated metastases have a comparable overall survival to those without metastases and should be treated with curative intent. However, LRRC patients with synchronous metastases have poorer metastasis-free survival and worse overall survival; in these patients, an individualized treatment approach to observe the behavior of the disease is recommended.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Intraoperative Electron Beam Radiation Therapy (IOERT) Versus High-Dose-Rate Intraoperative Brachytherapy (HDR-IORT) in Patients With an R1 Resection for Locally Advanced or Locally Recurrent Rectal Cancer

Eva L. K. Voogt et al.

Summary: This study compared the oncological outcomes of two IORT modalities in patients with LARC or LRRC, and found that HDR-IORT had significantly better local recurrence-free survival compared to IOERT, indicating a need for optimization of the IOERT technique.

Induction chemotherapy followed by chemoradiotherapy versus chemoradiotherapy alone as neoadjuvant treatment for locally recurrent rectal cancer: study protocol of a multicentre, open-label, parallel-arms, randomized controlled study (PelvEx II)

E. L. K. Voogt et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate whether the addition of induction chemotherapy can improve the R0 resection rate in patients with locally recurrent rectal cancer. The study is designed as a multicentre, international, open-label, phase III, parallel-arms study, with randomization into an experimental arm and a control arm.
