Robotic Surgery and Anatomic Segmentectomy: An Analysis of Trends, Patient Selection, and Outcomes

Nicolas Zhou et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed patient data from 2004 to 2019 and compared patient populations and outcomes between robotic surgery, VATS, and open surgery for segmentectomy. The results showed that despite longer operative time, robotic segmentectomy had lower blood loss, shorter chest tube days, and shorter lengths of stay compared to VATS and open surgery. There were no conversions from robotic to open surgery, and the occurrence of prolonged air leak was lower in the robotic group compared to open surgery.

Outcomes and quality of life after Robot-assisted lobectomy/segmentectomy for lung cancer compared to video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery: both three-port procedures performed by a single surgeon

Liang Zheng et al.

Summary: This study compares robot-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) in terms of safety, efficacy, quality of life, and complications for lung cancer patients. Despite the higher cost, RATS shows potential in reducing operation time and improving patients' quality of life.

Summary: The learning curve of robotic portal lobectomy with four arms (RPL-4) can be divided into three phases, with ten cases needed to pass the learning curve and at least 56 cases required to truly master the technique for satisfactory surgical outcomes.
