Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Children

Emir Muzurovic et al.

Summary: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is now the most common liver disease among children. The increasing prevalence of NAFLD and its advanced form, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), in young people parallels the rising rates of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. This trend has significant long-term implications, including increased morbidity and mortality due to liver and non-liver related conditions such as cardiovascular disease and cancer. This review summarizes current knowledge on pediatric NAFLD, including its causes, complications, prevention, and treatment options.

Caucasian lean subjects with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease share long-term prognosis of non-lean: time for reappraisal of BMI-driven approach?

Ramy Younes et al.

Summary: Lean Caucasian subjects with NAFLD may progress to advanced liver disease, develop metabolic comorbidities, and experience cardiovascular disease and liver-related mortality, independent of longitudinal progression to obesity and PNPLA3 genotype. These patients represent one end of a wide spectrum of phenotypic expression of NAFLD.

Distinct contributions of metabolic dysfunction and genetic risk factors in the pathogenesis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Panu K. Luukkonen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that the mechanisms underlying the metabolic and genetic components of NAFLD are fundamentally different. The metabolic component is characterized by hepatic oversupply of substrates, while the genetic component is characterized by impaired hepatic mitochondrial function.

Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Cardiovascular Disease: a Review of Shared Cardiometabolic Risk Factors

Summary: The prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is increasing, and it is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The two conditions share several risk factors, such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes. Personalized therapeutic approaches and public health policies are needed to effectively address the NAFLD epidemic.

From NAFLD to MAFLD: Implications of a Premature Change in Terminology

Zobair M. Younossi et al.

Summary: The article discusses the proposal to rename NAFLD to MAFLD, highlighting the shortcomings of the new term and warning that changing the name without a comprehensive understanding may have negative implications for the field. The recommendation is to establish a true international consensus group to assess the impact and consequences of the terminology change and make recommendations based on available evidence to move the field forward.

Adiponectin, Leptin and Cardiovascular Disorders

Shangang Zhao et al.

Summary: The discovery of leptin and adiponectin established adipose tissue as an important endocrine organ in cardiovascular health. Normal levels of adiponectin and leptin are crucial for proper cardiovascular function, while both excess and insufficient levels may contribute to cardiovascular disorders. High levels of both adiponectin and leptin are a paradoxical factor in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases.

What are the clinical settings and outcomes of lean NAFLD?

Tian-Yi Ren et al.

Summary: A new study has shown that even lean individuals can develop hepatic and extrahepatic complications from nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This highlights the importance of focusing on metabolic phenotypes in NAFLD assessment, rather than just BMI-based approaches.

Higher Serum Leptin Levels are Associated with a Reduced Risk of Sarcopenia but a Higher Risk of Dynapenia Among Older Adults

Tung-Wei Kao et al.

Summary: The study found a positive association between serum leptin levels and the risk of dynapenia, while a negative association was observed with the risk of sarcopenia in both male and female elderly individuals. Further investigation is needed to understand the biological mechanisms underlying these associations.

Summary: Lean NAFLD patients have higher levels of fetuin-A, while non-lean NAFLD patients do not show a significant association with fetuin-A levels. This suggests a specific association between fetuin-A and lean NAFLD.
