Sperm function and oxidative status: Effect on fertility in Bos taurus and Bos indicus bulls when semen is used for fixed-time artificial insemination

Roberta Ferreira Leite et al.

Summary: This study used conventional and functional techniques to evaluate sperm samples from bulls with known fertility history, revealing associations between mitochondrial dysfunctions, oxidative stress, and damage to sperm structures in lesser fertility bulls. Greater fertility bulls demonstrated better sperm quality and indicators of functional cell structures. The importance of evaluating and correlating different sperm functions to understand the effects of distinct parameters on sperm fertilization capacity was highlighted.

Advances in sperm cryopreservation in farm animals: Cattle, horse, pig and sheep

Ivan Yanez-Ortiz et al.

Summary: Sperm cryopreservation plays an important role in assisted reproduction technologies, but there are variations in post-thaw sperm quality among different species and individuals. The lack of standardized methods and the addition of substances, such as antioxidants, have been studied to improve post-thaw sperm quality and fertilizing capacity.

Crocin molecular signaling pathways at a glance: A comprehensive review

Motahareh Boozari et al.

Summary: This paper provides an updated and comprehensive review of the molecular mechanisms of crocin, a hydrophilic carotenoid synthesized in the flowers of the Crocus genus. The biological and pharmacological properties of crocin, including its memory-enhancing, anxiolytic, aphrodisiac, antidepressant, and neuroprotective effects, are discussed. Various studies have confirmed the significant impact of crocin on controlling pathological conditions such as oxidative stress, inflammation, metabolic disorders, neurodegenerative disorders, and cancer. The regulatory effects of crocin on multiple signaling pathways, particularly the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway, play a crucial role in these effects.

Impact of Oxidative Stress on Male Reproduction in Domestic and Wild Animals

Eliana Pintus et al.

Summary: Oxidative stress in the male reproductive system can impair sperm fertility, compromise offspring health, and induce oxidative damage to lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. While a clear link has been shown in humans and laboratory rodents, limited information is available on the impact of impaired redox homeostasis in male fertility of domestic and wild animals. Strategies to mitigate the detrimental effects of oxidative stress on male fertility are reviewed, along with their potential economic and ecological implications in the livestock industry and biodiversity conservation.
