Competitive Adsorption: Reducing the Poisoning Effect of Adsorbed Hydroxyl on Ru Single-Atom Site with SnO2 for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

Jiachen Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a competitive adsorption strategy was used to construct Ru SAs-SnO2/C catalysts for improved alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance. By regulating the interaction strength between Ru and OHad, the poisoning of Ru sites was alleviated, resulting in low overpotential and low Tafel slope.

Tailoring Binding Abilities by Incorporating Oxophilic Transition Metals on 3D Nanostructured Ni Arrays for Accelerated Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Jaerim Kim et al.

Summary: Efficient Ni-based thin film catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline water electrolysis were studied by incorporating oxophilic transition metal atoms, showing a volcano relation between OH-binding energies and alkaline HER activities. The Cr-incorporated Ni catalyst exhibited optimized binding energies and enhanced HER activity in alkaline media. Introducing 3D Ni nanohelix arrays further improved catalytic performance by providing abundant surface active sites and effective channels for charge transfer and mass transport.

Tip-Enhanced Electric Field: A New Mechanism Promoting Mass Transfer in Oxygen Evolution Reactions

Peng Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, NiFe alloy nanocone arrays were used to enhance the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) rate and outperform state-of-the-art OER electrocatalysts. The high-curvature tips on the nanocones induce a local electric field that significantly increases the concentration of hydroxide ions near the active sites, promoting OER activity. This local field enhanced OER kinetics is suggested to be a generic effect applicable to other OER catalysts.

A durable and pH-universal self-standing MoC-Mo2C heterojunction electrode for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Wei Liu et al.

Summary: The study presents a MoC-Mo2C catalytic electrode prepared using CO2, with excellent performance in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes, showing low overpotentials, long-lasting lifetime, and high-temperature performance. The self-standing hydrophilic porous surface, intrinsic mechanical strength, and self-grown MoC-Mo2C heterojunctions contribute to its outstanding hydrogen evolution reaction activity. Further, scalable fabrication of various carbide electrodes with rationally designed structures, tunable compositions, and favorable properties is demonstrated, highlighting the importance of efficient low-cost catalysts for water electrolyzers operating at industrial conditions.

Constructing a Graphene-Encapsulated Amorphous/Crystalline Heterophase NiFe Alloy by Microwave Thermal Shock for Boosting the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Zhichao Gong et al.

Summary: Efficient and robust catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are crucial for energy conversion technologies, with the core-shell electrocatalyst developed in this study showing significantly enhanced OER performance. The amorphous/crystalline structure of the NiFe alloy and graphene coatings played key roles in providing enriched active sites and electron transport pathways, leading to superior OER activity in 1 M KOH. This work provides insights for constructing metastable amorphous/crystalline heterophase catalysts for highly efficient electrocatalysis.
