Silicification-interlayered nanofiber substrates regulated crumpled ultrathin polyamide nanofilms for highly enhanced nanofiltration

Rui Sun et al.

Summary: A novel strategy of regulating the polyamide nanofilm by a silicification-interlayered nanofiber substrate has been reported to construct defect-free ultrathin polyamide nanofilms and achieve high permeability and selectivity. The silicified nanofiber substrate can serve as a templating support to crumple the polyamide nanofilms, increasing their effective infiltrating area. The intermolecular interactions in the interfacial polymerization system and the fundamental mechanism of the silicification-interlayered nanofiber substrate regulating the polymerization process have been investigated through simulations.

Fast water transport and molecular sieving through ultrathin ordered conjugated-polymer-framework membranes

Jie Shen et al.

Summary: Carbon nanomaterials like graphene have interesting molecular transport properties, but achieving regular channels over a large area requires perfect alignment. In this study, we developed a large-area two-dimensional conjugated-polymer-framework with regular pore distribution, resulting in 99.5% salt rejection by forward osmosis. The design and fabrication of these membranes provide a promising route for developing carbon-based membranes for precise molecular separation.

Water treatment based on atomically engineered materials: Atomic layer deposition and beyond

Xiaobin Yang et al.

Summary: Global water stress and challenges for producing sufficient supplies of fit-for-purpose water are driving development of atomically engineered interfaces as a powerful tool in the fabrication of advanced water treatment materials. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) and related methods offer a diverse library of chemistries for interface functionalization, enabling precise manipulation of thickness, stoichiometry, and physicochemical properties. By utilizing ALD/SIS engineering strategies, such as precise deposition and growth with intermediate layers, efficient water treatment can be realized, laying the groundwork for a universal functionalization platform for water treatment. Synergies with other widely used interface engineering techniques are also explored to develop facile, versatile, and energy-efficient strategies for addressing increasingly complex water challenges.
