Three-Dimensional Nanolithography with Visible Continuous Wave Laser through Triplet Up-Conversion

Zhijun Luo et al.

Summary: A direct laser writing method based on triplet up-conversion is proposed in this study, which offers low-cost, high-precision, multidimensional, and rapid processing characteristics for low-intensity fabrication of micronanostructures. The feasibility of this method is verified through dynamic modeling and experiments, achieving a minimum line width of micronanostructures (approximately 50 nm) at a laser intensity of 2.5 x 105 W/cm2 and a processing speed of 150 μm/s. Therefore, the direct laser writing method based on triplet up-conversion provides a new approach for low-intensity and high-precision micronanostructure fabrication.

Tracy Schloemer et al.

Summary: Using light to control matter has long been a goal for scientists, and triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) may provide a solution by converting low energy photons to high energy photons. This process allows for precise generation of high energy photons, overcoming challenges of light attenuation. Researchers are exploring various sensitizers and annihilators for TTA-UC in solution and solid-state applications. This review discusses deployment strategies and recent examples of TTA-UC, identifying critical needs to advance it from an academic curiosity to a scalable technology.

Blue-to-UVB Upconversion, Solvent Sensitization and Challenging Bond Activation Enabled by a Benzene-Based Annihilator

Till J. B. Zaehringer et al.

Summary: To drive energy-demanding photoreactions under mild conditions, low-energy visible light can be converted to high-energy singlet states through triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC). A new annihilator with a maximum emission wavelength in the UVB region, when combined with an organic sensitizer, enables blue-to-UVB upconversion. This study demonstrates a novel blue light-driven substrate or solvent activation strategy through UC-FRET reactions and paves the way for more sustainable light-to-chemical energy conversion systems.

Diarylethene Isomerization by Using Triplet-Triplet Annihilation Photon Upconversion

Wera Larsson et al.

Summary: Green-to-blue triplet-triplet annihilation photon upconversion is used to drive reversible photoisomerization of diarylethene (DAE) photoswitches using visible light. By carefully selecting the molecular system and experimental geometry, a single green light source can selectively trigger ring-opening and ring-closing reactions. The upconversion solution and DAE solution can be characterized concomitantly and individually without further separation processes. The efficiency of ring-closing reaction using upconverted photons is compared to direct isomerization with ultraviolet light.

High Triplet Energy Iridium(III) Isocyanoborato Complex for Photochemical Upconversion, Photoredox and Energy Transfer Catalysis

Lucius Schmid et al.

Summary: This study reports on a new Ir(III) luminophore with an unusually high triplet energy near 3.0 eV, achieved through the modification of a previously reported Ir(III) complex with isocyanoborato ligands. The introduction of B(C6F5)(3) units in the second coordination sphere improves its photophysical properties, resulting in a high luminescence quantum yield and a long excited-state lifetime. This newly developed Ir(III) complex demonstrates enhanced photocatalytic activity in challenging organic triplet photoreactions and (sensitized) triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion, even in the ultraviolet region. The study showcases the potential of rational ligand design in transition-metal complexes for applications in solar energy conversion and synthetic photochemistry.

Summary: Combining the energy input from two red photons allows for chemical reactions that would normally require blue or ultraviolet irradiation. This biphotonic excitation strategy offers advantages such as deeper penetration and less photo-damage. By altering the photosensitizer in a dual photocatalytic system, the reaction outcome can be completely altered. Different biphotonic mechanisms lead to different photochemical reactivities, which can be controlled by changing the photosensitizer.
