Siliang Cai et al.

Summary: Researchers have successfully developed a unique assembly strategy using amphiphilic homopolymers to construct stable two-dimensional chiral nanosheets. These nanosheets have a regular hexagonal structure and their size and thickness can be adjusted by varying the ratio of solvents and molecular weights. The two-dimensional architecture significantly enhances the circularly polarized luminescence of polymers and self-sorting of nanosheets can be directly observed using fluorescence microscopy.

Racemic Monomer-Based One-Handed Helical Polymer Recognizes Enantiomers through Auto-Evolution of Its Helical Handedness Excess

Tomoyuki Ikai et al.

Summary: The racemic monomer-based optically inactive polyacetylene can fold into a one-handed helix with the assistance of a nonracemic alcohol, serving as a chiral stationary phase in chromatography to separate enantiomers effectively. The polymer shows auto-evolution of helical handedness over time and enhanced optical purity of the nonracemic alcohol adsorbed on the helical polyacetylene due to chiral filter effect, contributing to increased helix-sense-excess.

Summary: The facile synthesis of high optically active helical polymers from achiral monomers is still a challenge. Chiral Ni(II) catalysts were prepared to efficiently initiate living/controlled polymerization of allene monomers, exhibiting interesting regioselectivity and helix-sense selectivity. The resulting polyallenes showed high optical activity, solely determined by the chirality of the Ni(II) catalysts.

Spatiotemporally programmable cascade hybridization of hairpin DNA in polymeric nanoframework for precise siRNA delivery

Feng Li et al.

Summary: DNA nanostructures have been used as carriers for gene delivery, but spatiotemporally programmable assembly of DNA under nanoconfinement is challenging due to DNA complexity. A strategy using cascade hybridization chain reaction of DNA hairpins in polymeric nanoframework enables precise siRNA delivery. The nanoframework provides stability and ease of functionalization, addressing DNA complexity issues. Phenylboronate installation on nanoframework enhances cellular uptake and lysosomal escape.

Tuning organic crystal chirality by the molar masses of tailored polymeric additives

Xichong Ye et al.

Summary: Hierarchically ordered chiral crystals have been the focus of intensive research efforts due to their potential applications in optical devices, asymmetric catalysis, and pharmaceutical crystal engineering. However, the use of expensive enantiomerically pure building blocks and the challenge of precise control over chirality transfer have hindered their practical application. A new strategy described in this study offers a solution by enabling the preferred formation of one enantiomorph from a racemic solution and subsequent enantiomer-specific oriented attachment through a balance of stereoselective and non-stereoselective interactions. This methodology allows for the efficient fabrication of homochiral organic crystals from racemic starting materials, demonstrating the potential for immediate practical use.

Wen-Bin Liu et al.

Summary: Controlled synthesis of bottlebrush polymers with high grafting density and carrying polymeric side chains on every backbone atom is a great challenge. In this study, well-defined polymers bearing polymerizable phenyl isocyanide were prepared, and polymerization of these macromonomers yielded bottlebrush polymers with PLLA or PDLA side chains on every backbone atom. The densely grafted polymers exhibited intriguing photoluminescence and induced clear circularly polarized luminescence with defined handedness.

Summary: Single crystals of a helical covalent polymer have been synthesized from an achiral monomer through spiroborate formation, showing pairs of mechanically entwined polymers in each crystal and producing a racemic conglomerate during the crystallization process. No strong non-covalent interactions were observed between the two helical polymers forming a pair, indicating hydrogen bonding with neighbouring pairs instead.

Tuning the Circular Dichroism and Circular Polarized Luminescence Intensities of Chiral 2D Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Perovskites through Halogenation of the Organic Ions

Jin-Tai Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of various halogen-substituted chiral organic cations on the chiroptical properties of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs). It was found that the HOIP with a chlorine-substituted chiral cation exhibits the highest circular dichroism (CD) and circular polarized luminescence (CPL) intensities, which can be correlated to the modulation of magnetic transition dipole and halogen-halogen interaction between organic cations and inorganic sheets.

Transfer, Amplification, Storage, and Complete Self-Recovery of Supramolecular Chirality in an Achiral Polymer System

Tengfei Miao et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that partially cross-linked azobenzene units, in combination with the self-assembly of Azo units and terminal hydroxyl groups in polymer side chains, can fully recover the destroyed helical superstructure in an achiral nematic polymer system. The stored chiral information can trigger perfect chiral self-recovery behavior even after being destroyed by UV light, heat, and solvents, paving the way for producing novel chiroptical materials with reversible chirality from achiral sources.

Emergence of Highly Enantioselective Catalytic Activity in a Helical Polymer Mediated by Deracemization of Racemic Pendants

Tomoyuki Ikai et al.

Summary: An unprecedented helical polymer-based highly enantioselective organocatalyst was reported, prepared by polymerization of a racemic monomer with no catalytic activity. The macromolecular helicity and the axial chirality induced in the polymer were retained after removal of the chiral alcohol, showing remarkable enantioselectivity for the asymmetric allylation of benzaldehyde. The enantioselectivity was slightly lower than that of the homochiral PBAs prepared from enantiopure monomers, but comparable to that of the helical PBA composed of nonracemic monomers.
