Lithium superionic conductors with corner-sharing frameworks

KyuJung Jun et al.

Summary: Superionic lithium conductivity has been observed in only a few materials, mainly in thiophosphates and rarely in oxides. This study reveals that the corner-sharing connectivity in the oxide crystal structure framework promotes superionic conductivity. By conducting a high-throughput search, the researchers discovered ten new oxide frameworks predicted to exhibit superionic conductivity. They also experimentally confirmed the high ionic conductivity of LiGa(SeO3)(2), demonstrating its potential as a new oxide electrolyte. These findings offer insight into the factors that govern fast lithium mobility in oxide materials and will accelerate the development of all-solid-state batteries.

A Series of Ternary Metal Chloride Superionic Conductors for High-Performance All-Solid-State Lithium Batteries

Jianwen Liang et al.

Summary: Understanding the relationship between structure, ionic conductivity, and synthesis is crucial for developing superionic conductors. This study reports a series of Li3-3xM1+xCl6 solid electrolytes with orthorhombic and trigonal structures. The orthorhombic phase shows significantly higher ionic conductivity compared to the trigonal phase. Molecular dynamics simulations explain the enhanced ionic conductivity by the facile diffusion in the z-direction in the orthorhombic structure. All-solid-state batteries based on NMC811/Li2.73Ho1.09Cl6/In exhibit excellent electrochemical performance. The findings provide guidance for the design of halide superionic conductors.

Correlating Structural Disorder to Li plus Ion Transport in Li4-xGe1-xSbxS4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.2)

Bianca Helm et al.

Summary: This study assesses the impact of Li+ substructure and charge carrier density on ionic transport in the Li4-xGe1-xSbxS4 substitution series using various techniques. The results show that structural disorder leads to an increase in configurational entropy and a two-order-of-magnitude increase in ionic conductivity.

High-Entropy Polyanionic Lithium Superionic Conductors

Florian Strauss et al.

Summary: This study reports on medium- and high-entropy polyanionic lithium superionic conductors crystallizing in the F-43m space group and adopting the argyrodite structure. The introduction of entropy marginally affects the room-temperature ionic conductivity, while lowering the activation energy for conduction.

Summary: This study investigates the structural transitions of amorphous silicon under increasing external pressure, revealing a three-step transformation sequence and demonstrating the transient nature of the VHDA phase, which rapidly nucleates crystallites. The machine learning model for electronic density of states provides support for the onset of metallicity during VHDA formation and subsequent crystallization, showcasing a machine learning-driven approach to predictive materials modeling.

Bridging the gap between simulated and experimental ionic conductivities in lithium superionic conductors

J. Qi et al.

Summary: This study presents a strategy using moment tensor potentials (MTP5) to improve the accuracy of predicting physical properties of lithium superionic conductors (LSCs), leading to more accurate predictions of ionic conductivities and activation energies. NPT MD simulations of three LSC5 revealed a transition between two quasi-linear Arrhenius regimes at relatively low temperatures, attributed to an increase in the number and diversity of diffusion pathways.
