Metallurgical alloy approach to two-dimensional supramolecular materials

Adam Dannenhoffer et al.

Summary: Alloys are mixtures of metallic elements used to search for superior functional properties. In this study, we demonstrate the formation of supramolecular alloys with changes in physical, photophysical, and mechanical properties using small organic molecules in water. We also identify supramolecular polymers containing multiple molecular species, similar to intermetallic compounds. The mechanism of alloy formation suggests the potential for controlled growth to create emergent functional structures in these assemblies.

Perylenetetracarboxylic acid nanosheets with internal electric fields and anisotropic charge migration for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Yan Guo et al.

Summary: This study synthesized perylenetetracarboxylic acid nanosheets with a thickness of approximately 1.5 nm and demonstrated their activity as highly efficient hydrogen evolution photocatalysts. The introduction of carboxyl groups increased the internal electric fields, promoting charge-carrier separation, and weakened charge-carrier recombination by migrating photogenerated electrons and holes to the edge and plane, respectively. Furthermore, the reduction potential and hydrophilic sites of perylenetetracarboxylic acid were enhanced. This work provides a strategy for designing future efficient photocatalysts.

Summary: Engineering the excited state landscapes of organic molecules using non-covalent interactions with appropriate donors allows for the modulation of emission characteristics and the achievement of ambient triplet harvesting. This study demonstrates the selective harvesting of emission from locally excited and charge-transfer singlet and triplet states through the interaction between a pyromellitic diimide derivative and donor molecules. The findings provide new dimensions to the existing molecular designs employed for triplet harvesting.

Acylhydrazone-based supramolecular assemblies undergoing a converse sol-to-gel transition on trans → cis photoisomerization

Zhao Gao et al.

Summary: Photoisomeric supramolecular assemblies have been a hot topic in recent years. In general, the photoisomerization process from irregular aggregates to regular assemblies leads to the destruction of assemblies. However, through the conversion from planar to nonplanar photoisomer, a converse sol-to-gel transition has been achieved. A well-designed acylhydrazone-linked monomer, with imine for trans-cis interconversion and amide for intermolecular hydrogen bonding, is used to drive the photoisomerization-induced self-assembly. The counterintuitive sol-to-gel transition is attributed to the partial trans->cis photoisomerization of acylhydrazone, which changes the stacking mode of monomers. This reversible phase transition also holds potential for miniature materials, as demonstrated in the formation of in situ valves in microfluidic devices.

Stereoselective Primary and Secondary Nucleation Events in Multicomponent Seeded Supramolecular Polymerization

Souvik Sarkar et al.

Summary: Bioinspired, kinetically controlled seeded growth has been shown to provide length, dispersity, and sequence control on the primary structure of dynamic supramolecular polymers. However, command over the molecular organization at all hierarchical levels for the modulation of higher order structures of supramolecular polymers remains challenging. Surface-catalyzed secondary nucleation process offers exciting possibilities for topology control in synthetic macromolecular systems, but mechanistic insights into the molecular determinants and driving forces for the secondary nucleation event in synthetic systems are lacking. The study attempts to fill this gap by demonstrating molecular chirality control on primary and secondary nucleation events in seed-induced supramolecular polymerization, with kinetic experiments providing insights into the nucleation processes.
