π-Extended Doublet Open-Shell Graphene Fragments Exhibiting One-Dimensional Chain Stacking

Yupeng Guo et al.

Summary: The previously elusive benzo[c]anthanthrenyl radical derivatives composed of seven fused six-membered rings have been successfully synthesized and isolated in crystalline form. X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed one-dimensional chain stacking and close intermolecular contacts, which are important for achieving single-component conductors. The magnetic, optical, and redox properties of these radicals were investigated in solution phase, and with their good stability, they show potential as functional electronic materials.

Charge-Transfer Cocrystal via a Persistent Radical Cation Acceptor for Efficient Solar-Thermal Conversion

Jieqiong Xu et al.

Summary: This article presents the design of an organic charge-transfer cocrystal using a persistent ABTS(+) radical cation as the electron acceptor. The cocrystal demonstrates high electron delocalization and absorption capacity due to the strong persistency and electron affinity of ABTS(+). It effectively captures the full solar spectrum and exhibits remarkable photothermal efficiency. The cocrystal is further utilized for solar-driven interfacial evaporation, achieving high evaporation rate and solar-to-vapor efficiency.

Selenoviologen-Appendant Metallacycles with Highly Stable Radical Cations and Long-Lived Charge Separation States for Electrochromism and Photocatalysis

Sikun Zhang et al.

Summary: Two coordinated metallacycles with selenoviologens pendants were synthesized and showed tunable optoelectronic properties. Femtosecond transient absorption experiments revealed that the formation of macrocyclic structure enhanced the stability of radical cation and improved the efficiency of intramolecular charge transfer. Using these metallacycles as photocatalysts achieved improved catalytic efficiency for visible-light-induced reactions.

Synthesis and Properties of Aza-Ovalene with Six Zigzag Edges

Laiyun Zhou et al.

Summary: A nitrogenated derivative of Ovalene with all zigzag edges and nitrogen atom doping at the periphery has been successfully developed through one-step nitrogenation of formylbisanthene. These molecules exhibit decreased highest occupied molecular orbital levels, enhanced intermolecular interactions, and reversible acid response due to nitrogen incorporation. Additionally, the aza-ovalene also shows a diatropic ring current along the periphery, providing rare examples of all-zigzag-edged N-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
