Masticatory muscle architectural correlates of dietary diversity in Canidae, Ursidae, and across the order Carnivora

Adam Hartstone-Rose et al.

Summary: This study analyzed architectural data of carnivoran families to explore the relationship between masticatory musculature and dietary ecology. The results showed that there were significant correlations between muscle tissue of musteloids and dietary size (DS) as well as dietary mechanical properties (DMP). This trend may reflect the increased morphological and dietary diversity of musteloids compared to other carnivoran groups.

Hind foot drumming: Volumetric micro-computed tomography investigation of the hind limb musculature of three African mole-rat species (Bathyergidae)

Lauren Sahd et al.

Summary: Seismic signalling through hind foot drumming is used for communication by several species of African mole-rats. This study compared and analyzed muscle volumes in different African mole-rat species, finding that drumming species had larger muscle volume percentages in certain key hip and knee extensor muscles, while digging strategy and body size also played a role in muscle volume differences.

New frontiers in imaging, anatomy, and mechanics of crocodylian jaw muscles

Casey M. Holliday et al.

Summary: New imaging and biomechanical approaches have led to a renaissance in our understanding of crocodylian anatomy, particularly in the study of jaw muscles. These approaches, such as iodine-contrast microCT and 3D modeling, provide new insights into the anatomy, diversity, and function of jaw muscles and the heads of crocodylians.

Estimating bite force in extinct dinosaurs using phylogenetically predicted physiological cross-sectional areas of jaw adductor muscles

Manabu Sakamoto

Summary: This paper presents a Bayesian phylogenetic predictive modelling framework that can predict muscle parameters in extinct archosaurs based on skull width and phylogeny. The approach achieves high prediction accuracy and can be used as an alternative to muscle reconstructions for predicting muscle parameters in species.

Enhancing CT imaging: A safe protocol to stain and de-stain rare fetal museum specimens using diffusible iodine-based staining (diceCT)

Agnese Lanzetti et al.

Summary: Computed tomography (CT) scanning, particularly using diceCT, has been effectively utilized in studying natural history and examining internal anatomy of unique specimens in museum collections. This technique involves diffusible iodine-based contrast enhancement that can stain tissues to improve image quality and then be reversible for preservation of rare specimens. The process has been optimized through pilot studies on small specimens before application to larger, irreplaceable specimens such as baleen whales.

Fiber-type phenotype of the jaw-closing muscles in Gorilla gorilla, Pan troglodytes, and Pan paniscus: A test of the Frequent Recruitment Hypothesis

Andrea B. Taylor et al.

Summary: The study found that gorillas have a higher proportion of slow, fatigue-resistant fiber types in their chewing muscle tissue, which may be related to their more frequent feeding behavior. This discovery provides a clue to the relationship between behavioral flexibility and muscle fiber phenotype.

The diet of early birds based on modern and fossil evidence and a new framework for its reconstruction

Case Vincent Miller et al.

Summary: This study reviews methods for determining diet in modern and fossil avians, as well as non-avian theropods, and proposes a set of comparable, quantitative approaches to ascertain fossil bird diet. The current state of knowledge of non-avian avialan diet is considered incomplete, with trends in dietary evolution yet to emerge clearly. It is expected that with further research and discoveries in different locations and climates, a deeper understanding of bird diets and their role in ecosystems will be achieved.

Evaluating bony predictors of bite force across the order Carnivora

Edwin Dickinson et al.

Summary: In this study, three cranial osteological techniques were compared for estimating muscle size in carnivorans, with 3D approaches proving to be more accurate. The maximum cross-sectional area of a muscle was found to be more closely correlated with muscle mass and physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA) than estimates derived from muscle attachment areas.

Cranial Musculoskeletal Description of Black-Throated Finch (Aves: Passeriformes: Estrildidae) with DiceCT

K. H. T. To et al.

Summary: This study utilized iodine-based contrast-enhanced computed tomography to analyze the cranial musculature of Black-throated Finch at fledgling and adult stages. The results showed clear partitioning in the cranial musculature of Musculus adductor mandibulae externus for both fledglings and adults, with a decrease in muscle mass observed in adults compared to fledglings. The findings suggest that the decrease in muscle mass in adults may be due to a low sample size or a physiological effect of parental care in Passeriformes.
