Contemporary ion mobility spectrometry applications and future trends towards environmental, health and food research: A review

Pedro Catalao Moura et al.

Summary: Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS) has gained relevance in the field of analytical techniques, thanks to its outstanding sensitivity, selectivity, and almost real-time results capacity. This paper reviews hundreds of scientific works from the past ten years to assess the role of IMS in scientific research. Three main categories of IMS applications are identified: environmental and safety research, health research, and food research. The potential of IMS to support diverse scientific fields is evident throughout the text.

Negative-mode ion mobility spectrometry-comparison of ion-molecule reactions and electron capture processes

Edyta Budzynska et al.

Summary: The presented work focuses on the impact of ionization mechanisms on detection sensitivity in negative-mode ion mobility spectrometry. The research was conducted on selected organic analytes using DT IMS in the negative mode of operation. Two ionization mechanisms, electron capture and ion-molecule reactions, can be used in the negative mode of detection depending on the carrier gas. The experiments were carried out using air and nitrogen as carrier gases, allowing for a comparison of the ionization mechanisms. The study also investigated the effect of oxygen and water admixtures in carrier gases on the detection efficiency of selected organic compounds.

Kinetics in DMS: Modeling Clustering and Declustering Reactions

Alexander Haack et al.

Summary: Differential mobility spectrometry (DMS) utilizes high-frequency oscillating electrical fields to separate complex sample mixtures. This study investigates the behavior of different reactions in DMS at different field strengths. It is found that cluster association and dissociation reactions are generally fast, but low solvent concentration, small dipole moments, and strong ion-solvent binding can cause a lag in the ion's DMS response.

Negative Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization of Chlorinated Hydrocarbons Studied by Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS) and IMS-MS Techniques

Ladislav Moravsky et al.

Summary: This study investigated the atmospheric pressure chemical ionization of selected chlorinated hydrocarbons using ion mobility spectrometry and mass spectrometry techniques. The experiments revealed the formation of Cl- ions and [O2H center dot center dot Cl](-) ions for all substances, with the latter being absent in perchlorinated substances. Quantum-chemical calculations supported the experimental observations.

Simulation of Cluster Dynamics of Proton-Bound Water Clusters in a High Kinetic Energy Ion-Mobility Spectrometer

Duygu Erdogdu et al.

Summary: Ion mobility spectrometry separates ions based on their motion through a drift tube with an electric field, affected by factors like chemical dynamics and physical parameters. High kinetic energy IMS involves a reduced electric field strength, impacting ion mobility, with numerical simulations playing a key role in understanding and validating experimental observations.

Studies on the Processes of Electron Capture and Clustering of Benzyl Chloride by Ion Mobility Spectrometry

Izabela Wolanska et al.

Summary: This study investigates the ionization process of benzyl chloride in a drift tube ion mobility spectrometer using nitrogen as the carrier gas, revealing that ionization follows the dissociative electron capture mechanism and leads to the formation of cluster ions. By analyzing drift time spectra, the electron attachment rate for BzCl and the equilibrium constant for cluster ion formation were estimated. Theoretical interpretation of the results is based on ion transport mathematically, considering diffusion, formation, and dissociation of ionic clusters during ion movement in the drift section.
