Online hyphenation of size-exclusion chromatography and pyrolysis-gas chromatography for polymer characterization

Wouter C. Knol et al.

Summary: It is important to understand the composition and molecular heterogeneities of complex industrial polymers to control their physical properties. This study developed an online method that combines liquid polymer chromatography with pyrolysis-GC (Py-GC) to analyze the composition and molar mass distribution of industrial polymers. The method allows for fractionation of the first-dimension effluent and efficient analysis of complex samples.

Packed modulation loops to reduce band broadening in two-dimensional liquid chromatography

Wouter C. Knol et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the use of packed loops in modulation interfaces in 2D-LC and compares them to unpacked coiled and uncoiled modulation loops. The study found that packed loops reduce dispersion of chromatographic peaks compared to unpacked loops and uncoiled loops in all cases, with significantly reduced dispersion for larger loop volumes. Furthermore, countercurrent elution resulted in narrower elution profiles in all cases compared to concurrent elution. The study also suggests that packed loops are particularly useful when analytes are not refocused in the second-dimension separation.

Co-Polymer sequence determination over the molar mass distribution by size-exclusion chromatography combined with pyrolysis - gas chromatography

Wouter C. Knol et al.

Summary: The chain sequence of copolymers plays a crucial role in determining their physical properties. However, there are limited analytical methods available for monitoring the sequence of copolymers. In this study, the authors investigated the use of pyrolysis - gas chromatography (Py-GC) as an alternative method and successfully combined it with nuclear-magnetic-resonance spectroscopy (NMR) to obtain quantitative information on the chain sequence and composition of random and block copolymers.

Detection challenges in quantitative polymer analysis by liquid chromatography

Wouter C. Knol et al.

Summary: Accurate quantification of complex polymers in liquid chromatography is a challenging task, often relying on refractive index detection which is limited by unknown refractive index increment. New detection methods are being reviewed to improve quantitative analysis of complex polymers.

Modelling of analyte profiles and band broadening generated by interface loops used in multi-dimensional liquid chromatography

Ali Moussa et al.

Summary: The study aimed to understand and quantify the dispersion occurring in open tubular interface loops using numerical simulation methods and experimental measurements. It was found that for a straight loop capillary, the peak variance depends on a dimensionless parameter and the ratio of filling and emptying flow rates significantly impacts the result. Additionally, when a tightly coiled loop is used instead of a straight capillary, smaller peak variances are observed.
