Toward the elimination of race-based mecncine: replace race with racism as preeclampsia risk factor

Erinma P. Ukoha et al.

Summary: Pregnancy-related morbidity and mortality disproportionately affect Black birthing people. By removing race as a risk factor and addressing the impact of racism, we can work towards health equity. This includes revising guidelines for aspirin prophylaxis in preeclampsia to focus on anti-Black racism rather than Black race.

Race-based medicine in the point-of-care clinical resource UpToDate: A systematic content analysis

Jessica P. Cerdena et al.

Summary: This article investigates the nature of mentions of Black/African American race in UpToDate (R). The findings suggest that UpToDate (R) articles often inappropriately link Black race to genetics or clinical phenotype without considering socio-structural variables or the health effects of structural racism. UpToDate (R) articles may also promote unequal treatment by recommending race-based clinical practices, risking exacerbating racialized health inequities.
