Vaginal progesterone vs intramuscular 17-hydroxyprogesterone caproate for prevention of recurrent preterm birth: a randomized controlled trial

Rupsa C. Boelig et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare vaginal progesterone with 17-hydroxyprogesterone caproate in preventing recurrent preterm birth in singleton pregnancies with previous spontaneous preterm birth. The results showed that vaginal progesterone did not reduce the risk of recurrent preterm birth by 50% compared to 17-OHPC, but it may lead to increased latency to delivery.

Summary: A retrospective cohort study using MarketScan claims database found that there was no significant increased risk for venous thromboembolism associated with the use of 17-alpha hydroxyprogesterone caproate (17 P) during pregnancy. Even when restricted to patients without a prior diagnosis of venous thromboembolism, women receiving 17 P did not show a significant increase in risk.
