The association between preterm birth and postpartum mental healthcare utilization among California birthing people

Lucia M. Calthorpe et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of preterm birth on postpartum mental healthcare utilization and found that mothers of preterm infants had a 1.5 times and 1.3 times increased risk of being hospitalized with a mental health diagnosis within 3 months and 1 year after delivery, respectively, compared to those giving birth to term infants. The risk of emergency department visits for mental health diagnoses also increased by 1.4 times and 1.3 times within 3 months and 1 year postpartum for mothers of preterm infants.
