Quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment: Modifications for Identifying Maternal Morbidity and Mortality in Obstetrical Patients

Sarah G. Cagino et al.

Summary: The standard qSOFA is not effective in predicting severe maternal morbidity in pregnant women with infections, while a pregnancy-specific modification (qSOFA-P) significantly improves predictive accuracy. Further studies are needed to validate this pregnancy-specific screening system in pregnant women.

How should we interpret lactate in labour? A reference study

Samuel Dockree et al.

Summary: Maternal lactate concentrations were found to be elevated during labour and the puerperium, with the levels higher in women who had vaginal deliveries compared to caesarean sections. On the other hand, C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were higher in women who had caesarean sections. The results suggest that lactate levels may be a useful marker for investigating and managing sepsis in labour.

Postpartum-Specific Vital Sign Reference Ranges

Lauren J. Green et al.

Summary: The study aimed to estimate normal ranges for postpartum maternal vital signs, revealing an increase in systolic and diastolic blood pressures from the day of birth to days 5 and 6 postpartum, with a subsequent return to baseline by day 14. Heart rate decreased over the 14-day postpartum period, while oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, and temperature remained stable.

Impact of Socioeconomic Status and Race on Sepsis Epidemiology and Outcomes

Emi Minejima et al.

Summary: This review investigates the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and sepsis incidence and outcomes, highlighting that individuals with lower SES are more likely to develop sepsis earlier in life and have poorer outcomes. Low SES is associated with higher mortality and hospital readmission rates for sepsis, with significant barriers to access healthcare including cost, transportation, health literacy, and lack of social support. Future studies should consider consistent polysocial risk scores for meaningful comparisons.
