Hematologic Toxicity Comparison of Intensity Modulated Proton Therapy and Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy in Anal Cancer Patients

Summary: This study compared the hematologic toxicity in anal cancer patients treated with intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT) versus intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). The results showed that IMPT resulted in lower doses of pelvic bone marrow and active bone marrow compared to IMRT. However, there was no significant difference in hematologic toxicity between the two groups.

Multi-institutional Comparison of Intensity Modulated Photon Versus Proton Radiation Therapy in the Management of Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Anus

Summary: This study compared the acute toxicities and oncologic outcomes of IMPT and IMRT in squamous cell carcinoma of the anus patients. Despite reducing the volume of normal tissue receiving low-dose radiation, IMPT did not decrease acute toxicities or 2-year progression-free survival rate. Further follow-up is needed to evaluate potential differences in late toxicities.
