Stakeholders, Institutional Challenges and the Valuation of Wetland Ecosystem Services in South Sudan: The Case of Machar Marshes and Sudd Wetlands

Dawit W. Mulatu

Summary: This study conducted a valuation of ecosystem services in wetlands in South Sudan, specifically the Machar Marshes and the Sudd wetlands. The findings showed that the economic value of these wetlands extends beyond the local communities. To ensure sustainable wetland management, stakeholders need to address institutional challenges.

Biodiversity and ecosystem services on the African continent - What is changing, and what are our options?

E. Archer et al.

Summary: Biodiversity and nature's contributions to people are in danger worldwide, particularly in Africa where they are negatively impacted by drivers such as land use and climate change. Among five plausible futures for Africa, prioritizing environment and sustainability is shown as the most likely path to achieving long term development objectives without harming biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Nature-based recreation in Germany: Insights into volume and economic significance

Johannes Hermes et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the volume and economic significance of nature-based recreation in Germany, revealing that 81% of respondents participated in such activities within a year, mainly motivated by 'experiencing nature'. The total participation volume amounts to 3.3 billion trips and 16.6 billion hours, with an economic significance of euro 151.3 billion.

Future losses of ecosystem services due to coastal erosion in Europe

Dominik Paprotny et al.

Summary: Coastal erosion is a major issue facing Europe, with potential future sea level rise leading to significant declines in coastal ecosystem services. The study estimates that salt marshes would face the highest absolute losses, while countries like Denmark and Albania would be most affected economically. Urgent mitigation actions are highlighted as necessary.

Disentangling ecosystem services perception by stakeholders: An integrative assessment based on land cover

Pedro Cabral et al.

Summary: Understanding stakeholders' perception of ecosystem services (ES) and quantifying their supply is crucial for sustainable management. The study in Portugal found that drought regulation was the most valued ES, while recreation was considered least important. Agricultural areas and forests provide majority of the total ES in the country.

Effects of Long-Term Land Use and Land Cover Changes on Ecosystem Service Values: An Example from the Central Rift Valley, Ethiopia

Wolde Mekuria et al.

Summary: Changes in land use and land cover have led to a total loss of US $62,110.4 x 10(6) in ecosystem service values over the past 47 years, with the expansion of farmlands at the expense of forestlands, grasslands, and shrublands being a major contributing factor. The study emphasizes the importance of addressing land and water resource degradation to achieve Sustainable Development Goals related to food and water security and life on land.

Mapping and assessing ecosystems and their services: a comparative approach to ecosystem service supply in Suriname and French Guiana

Ina Maren Sieber et al.

Summary: This study conducted the first spatial ecosystem services (ES) assessments at a territorial level for Suriname and French Guiana, revealing that forest ecosystems have the highest ES capacities while agricultural and urban land cover show weaker capacities. There was a 30% difference in the ES supply matrices between the two territories, with Suriname scoring higher than French Guiana, possibly due to differences in land cover distribution and governance mechanisms.
