Black and White individuals differ in dementia prevalence, risk factors, and symptomatic presentation

Jack C. Lennon et al.

Summary: Despite lower dementia prevalence, Black participants with dementia had more dementia risk factors, as well as greater cognitive impairment and neuropsychiatric symptom severity than White participants.

Associations Between Neuropsychiatric Symptoms and Neuropathological Diagnoses of Alzheimer Disease and Related Dementias

Davangere P. Devanand et al.

Summary: This study analyzed 1808 brains and found a higher prevalence of hallucinations in patients with Lewy body disease and Alzheimer disease compared to those with just Lewy body disease. The criteria of apathy and disinhibition in behavioral variant frontotemporal lobar degeneration were supported. Additionally, patients with hippocampal sclerosis often displayed increased apathy and disinhibition.

Summary: With projected trends in population ageing and growth, the number of people with dementia is expected to increase. Understanding the distribution and magnitude of anticipated growth is crucial for public health planning and resource prioritization, with a focus on potentially modifiable risk factors.

The complex relationship between depression and progression to incident cognitive impairment across race and ethnicity

Ganesh M. Babulal et al.

Summary: Baseline differences in depression and antidepressant use were observed among cognitively normal older adults in different ethnoracial groups, and depression was found to independently predict a faster progression to incident cognitive impairment across these groups.

Association of Race and Ethnicity With Incidence of Dementia Among Older Adults

Erica Kornblith et al.

Summary: This study investigated dementia incidence among older veterans in the US based on race and ethnicity, revealing significant differences in dementia rates among different racial and ethnic groups. The findings suggest a need for further research to understand the underlying mechanisms responsible for these disparities.

Psychosis as a Treatment Target in Dementia: A Roadmap for Designing Interventions

Luis Aguera-Ortiz et al.

Summary: Psychotic phenomena are severe and disruptive symptoms in dementia patients, occurring in 30% to 50% of cases. Current treatments have limited results and adverse effects. This review discusses the need for new treatments and proposes improvements in symptom definition, clinical trial design, and evaluation. It also explores the neurobiological basis of symptoms and provides an overview of existing pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments. The review highlights the importance of better defining and measuring psychotic symptoms in dementia and suggests potential therapeutic targets.

Ethnic Differences Between Hispanics and Non-Hispanic Whites in Neuropsychiatric Symptoms Predict Conversion to Mild Cognitive Impairment

Bhaskar Thakur et al.

Summary: The study aims to investigate the impact of neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) subtypes on progression to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) by ethnicity. Three NPS subtypes were identified and validated internally, with psychomotor apathy factor being the best predictor for MCI in non-Hispanics, and physical behavior factor being the most predictive in Hispanics. A high score in affective mood factor also tended to increase the risk of MCI in Hispanics. The differential prediction of MCI progression by NPS subtypes in Hispanics and non-Hispanic whites could help in monitoring individuals at risk of MCI.

Psychosis in neurodegenerative disease: differential patterns of hallucination and delusion symptoms

Georges Naasan et al.

Summary: This study compared the rates and content of psychosis in patients with different neurodegenerative diseases. It found that patients with Lewy body disease/Alzheimer's disease pathology were more likely to have hallucinations, while patients with FTLD-TDP were more likely to have delusions. The data suggests that the nature and content of psychosis can provide valuable information about underlying neurodegenerative pathology.

2021 Alzheimer's disease facts and figures

[Anonymous]

Summary: Alzheimer's disease has a significant impact on individuals and society as a whole, with a large number of patients in the United States and a potential for continued growth in the future. The value of unpaid caregivers has increased despite a decline in their numbers, and healthcare costs are on the rise. Racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare persist, highlighting the need for greater diversity in dementia care workforce and clinical trials.
