Plant responses to heat stress involve a variety of cellular, physiological, and molecular mechanisms, including early sensing, signal transduction, osmolyte synthesis, antioxidant defense, and gene expression. The regulation of heat stress responses also involves heat stress transcription factors, miRNAs, and transcriptional factors, forming another layer of regulatory circuit.

Classic and exertional heatstroke

Summary: In the past two decades, there has been an increase in heat-related deaths worldwide, including heatstroke, which is characterized by a rapid rise in core body temperature and central nervous system dysfunction. Classic heatstroke occurs from passive exposure to extreme heat, while exertional heatstroke is experienced during strenuous exercise. Both types of heatstroke can be fatal, with mortality rates of 63.2% and 26.5% for classic and exertional heatstroke, respectively. Pathological studies have revealed organ damage, inflammation, thrombosis, and bleeding in heatstroke patients. Survivors may suffer long-term complications and a persistent risk of death. Current treatments for heatstroke focus on rapid cooling, and further research is needed to identify genetic factors and develop specific management approaches.

Tropical tree mortality has increased with rising atmospheric water stress

Summary: Evidence suggests that tree mortality is increasing in certain tropical regions, which could have significant impacts on the carbon sink and carbon budget. The mechanisms and species vulnerability behind these mortality changes are still unclear. A 49-year study of old-growth forest plots in the Australian moist tropics revealed that annual tree mortality risk doubled on average over the last 35 years, potentially reducing life expectancy and carbon residence time. Losses in biomass were not counteracted by growth and recruitment. Higher mortality risk was observed in less moist local climates, but local mean climate did not predict the rate of temporal increase in mortality risk. Species exhibited different trajectories in their mortality risk, and the highest average risk was found in species closer to the upper end of the atmospheric vapor pressure deficit niches. The long-term increase in vapor pressure deficit suggested that atmospheric water stress, driven by global warming, may be a primary cause of increasing tree mortality in moist tropical forests.
