Loss of hepatic DRP1 exacerbates alcoholic hepatitis by inducing megamitochondria and mitochondrial maladaptation

Xiaowen Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanisms by which alcohol consumption increases megamitochondria formation in the pathogenesis of alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). The findings suggest that alcohol intake decreases hepatic dynamin-related protein 1 (DRP1), resulting in increased megamitochondria and mitochondrial maladaptation. This maladaptation promotes liver injury and inflammation through mitochondria-mediated inflammation and cell injury pathways.

Mitochondrial dysfunction and mitochondrion-targeted therapeutics in liver diseases

Li Xiang et al.

Summary: The liver, a vital metabolic and detoxifying organ, is susceptible to damage. Mitochondrial dysfunction exacerbates liver diseases through inflammation and fibrogenesis. Recent research highlights the importance of improving mitochondrial quality control mechanisms for maintaining liver health.

Differential blood transcriptome modules predict response to corticosteroid therapy in alcoholic hepatitis

Shvetank Sharma et al.

Summary: In patients with severe alcoholic hepatitis, those who do not respond to steroids show higher activity of gene modules related to T and B cells, NK cells, and mitochondrial electron transport chain in PBMCs at baseline and during corticosteroid therapy compared to steroid responders.
