Narrowing yield gaps does not guarantee a living income from smallholder farming-an empirical study from western Kenya

Wytze Marinus et al.

Summary: Crop yields in sub-Saharan Africa need to increase to keep up with the growing population, but many smallholder farmers live in poverty and cannot afford to invest in inputs to increase yields. To address this paradox, whole-farm experiments were conducted to investigate the impact of providing farmers with input vouchers on maize yields and overall farm-level production in two locations in western Kenya. The results showed that the provision of vouchers significantly increased maize yields and had a positive effect on household income, but additional institutional changes are needed to lift smallholder farmers out of poverty.

What Farm Size Sustains a Living? Exploring Future Options to Attain a Living Income From Smallholder Farming in the East African Highlands

Wytze Marinus et al.

Summary: Smallholder farming in sub-Saharan Africa often leads to poor productivity and low incomes. This study explores the viable farm size needed to achieve a decent income, which includes a nutritious diet, housing, education, and healthcare. Increasing farm area and/or intensifying production is necessary for small-scale farmers to attain a living income, but it requires significant investment and land reform.

Living income benchmarking of rural households in low-income countries

Gerrie W. J. van de Ven et al.

Summary: The article introduces the Living Income Methodology as a transparent local benchmark to estimate living income for rural households, providing a means to assess development opportunities in low-income countries. It can reflect progress of rural households on their path out of poverty and acts as a meaningful benchmark to measure progress on Sustainable Development Goals 1 and 2.

That is my farm - An integrated co-learning approach for whole-farm sustainable intensification in smallholder farming

Wytze Marinus et al.

Summary: The integrated co-learning approach developed to address knowledge and resource constraints in sub-Saharan Africa successfully improved farm level productivity and promoted learning among farmers in Kenya. The implementation of complementary elements such as input vouchers, iterative learning processes, common grounds for communication, and complementary knowledge resulted in both farmers and researchers benefiting from multiple learning loops. The tangible outcomes included a more diverse and cohesive knowledge among co-learning farmers, as well as a shift towards more sustainable farming practices.

Basket of options: Unpacking the concept

E. Ronner et al.

Summary: Stimulating technological change to enhance agricultural productivity and reduce poverty involves offering potential users a 'basket of options' with various agricultural technologies to choose from. The dimensions of a basket, including its depth and breadth, should reflect the framing of the problem or opportunity at hand. The selection of specific options and potential adaptation provide important opportunities for learning.

The future of farming: Who will produce our food?

Ken E. Giller et al.

Summary: Achieving SDG2 requires continued focus on food production and understanding the complex interrelations between farms and farming systems of different scales and methods globally. The bewildering diversity of farming systems worldwide and the economic viability of agriculture are key challenges to be addressed in achieving zero hunger.

Fertilizer and grain prices constrain food production in sub-Saharan Africa

Camila Bonilla-Cedrez et al.

Summary: Farmers in sub-Saharan Africa would need to use more fertilizers to increase crop yields, but the fertilizer and maize price ratio poses a strong barrier in most regions. Closing the 'ecological yield gap' is considered important for food security, but there may be weak economic incentives for farmers to substantially increase yields. Agricultural intensification could be supported by complementary agronomic approaches to improve soil fertility and lower fertilizer costs.

Misperceived quality: Fertilizer in Tanzania

Hope Michelson et al.

Summary: Fertilizer use in most of Sub-Saharan Africa remains below recommended levels, leading to low yields and poverty. A study in Tanzania found that although fertilizers met industry standards, farmers' beliefs about adulteration reduce their willingness to pay, reflecting an inconsistent belief-reality equilibrium. Additionally, farmers rely on degraded appearance to assess nutrient content incorrectly, indicating a quality inference problem in the market.
