Agricultural Biogas Production-Climate and Environmental Impacts

Henrik B. Moller et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion can reduce greenhouse gas emissions from livestock manure and produce biogas as a substitute for fossil energy. Different scenarios show reductions in GHG emissions ranging from 65 to 105 kg CO2-eq ton(-1) biomass.

Digestate Composition Affecting N Fertiliser Value and C Mineralisation

Franziska Haefner et al.

Summary: A variety of organic feedstocks can be used for anaerobic digestion, resulting in different compositions of digestates, which can affect their fertiliser value and organic matter degradation. Field and incubation experiments showed that the fertiliser value and degradability of the digestates varied with their composition. Food waste digestate exhibited the highest N offtake and organic matter mineralisation among the digestates.

Summary: Manure is a key source of nitrogen for crops, but it also contributes to N2O emissions from soil. The effects of different treatments on N2O emissions are still uncertain.

Summary: The study reveals differences between organic and conventional farms in terms of nitrogen input, output, and balance. Organic farms show higher nitrogen-use efficiency and lower nitrogen balances, with organic mixed/dairy farms performing the best.
