Cover crop functional types differentially alter the content and composition of soil organic carbon in particulate and mineral-associated fractions

Ziliang Zhang et al.

Summary: Cover crops can increase soil organic carbon sequestration through additional organic carbon residues, beneficial soil microbiota, and improved soil structure. Different cover crop species belonging to distinct plant functional types may have differential impacts on soil organic carbon formation and stabilization. The litter quality of plant functional types can influence the pathways and magnitude of soil organic carbon sequestration.

The role of cover crops in improving soil fertility and plant nutritional status in temperate climates. A review

Aurelio Scavo et al.

Summary: This article critically reviews the reciprocal relationships between cover crops (CCs), soil properties, microbial communities, nutrient availability, and plant nutritional status in temperate climates. It provides an overview of the current understanding, the influence of CC management options, and suggested strategies for each topic. The management of CCs plays a key role in optimizing nutrient use efficiency and improving soil health, but the complex and dynamic interactions between CCs and soil/plant nutrition require further research and site-specific management strategies.

Different climate sensitivity of particulate and mineral-associated soil organic matter

Emanuele Lugato et al.

Summary: Soil carbon sequestration is important in mitigating climate change, but the vulnerability of soil carbon to climate change needs to be accurately assessed. By separating soil carbon into different fractions, we can better understand its vulnerability and develop effective sequestration strategies. Different carbon fractions in soils have varying sensitivity to climate change, and management practices need to be implemented to enhance soil carbon stocks and resilience.

Summary: This study synthesized data on the contribution of plant- and microbial-derived compounds to stabilized SOM, indicating different proportions of contribution between plant and microbial compounds in different ecosystems. Plant biomolecules were found to play a significant role in stabilizing organic matter.

Plant rhizodeposition: A key factor for soil organic matter formation in stable fractions

Sebastian H. Villarino et al.

Summary: The formation of soil organic carbon is poorly understood, with uncertainties remaining for the contributions of different inputs to the particulate and mineral-associated organic carbon fractions. Rhizodeposition has the highest efficiency in forming MAOC, while root biomass inputs have the highest efficiency in forming POC. Rhizodeposition and roots play opposite but complementary roles in building MAOC and POC fractions.
