Antibiotic responsibility and agricultural publics: diverse stakeholder perceptions of antibiotic use in animal agriculture

Factors Associated with Antimicrobial Stewardship Practices on California Dairies: One Year Post Senate Bill 27

Summary: This study investigates the factors associated with antimicrobial drug (AMD) use and stewardship practices on conventional California (CA) dairies. The findings suggest that factors such as having a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, using preventive alternatives to AMD, and changing management practices are associated with familiarity with medically important antimicrobial drugs (MIADs), decreased use of MIADs previously available over the counter (OTC), and improved animal health. These survey findings can contribute to promoting antimicrobial stewardship practices on dairies.

Understanding Antibiotic Resistance as a Perceived Threat towards Dairy Cattle through Beliefs and Practices: A Survey-Based Study of Dairy Farmers

Summary: This study investigated the dairy farmers' level of concern about antibiotic resistance and their interest in adopting new judicious antibiotic use practices for mastitis treatment. The findings revealed that while some farmers were not concerned about the negative impact of antibiotic use on dairy cattle health, most farmers reported not treating mastitis with antibiotics at the first sign and already implementing culture-based mastitis treatment practices. The adoption of culture-based treatment methods was significantly associated with a higher use of antibiotics on the farms.

Summary: Humans, animals, and the environment are facing a universal crisis of antimicrobial resistance (AR), with underdeveloped efforts to address it in various sectors, including human and veterinary medicine. Stakeholders from the animal agriculture sector, one of the largest purchasers of antimicrobial drugs, have differing views on AR and how to address it. The need for consistent messaging efforts to describe the global implications of the AR crisis has been proposed, but there is a gap between recommendations and the perspectives of animal agriculture stakeholders.

Consumer perceptions of antimicrobial use in animal husbandry: A scoping review

Summary: Research in the United States, Canada, and the European Union indicates that consumers are concerned about the use of antimicrobials in meat products, primarily due to human health and animal welfare concerns, with antimicrobial resistance being a lesser concern. Personal characteristics of consumers expressing concern include gender, age, income, and education levels. Studies predominantly focus on willingness-to-pay studies and Likert scale questionnaires.

Survey on Antimicrobial Drug Use Practices in California Preweaned Dairy Calves

Summary: The survey conducted in July 2017 on the California dairy industry showed that most producers considered judicious use of antibiotics as a key practice in raising preweaned dairy calves, however, treating sick calves remained the major indication for antimicrobial drug use. The survey also indicated that a few producers had started to explore the use of alternatives to antimicrobial drugs.

New York State dairy veterinarians' perceptions of antibiotic use and resistance: A qualitative interview study

Summary: The study interviewed 9 dairy veterinarians in New York State and found that they believed antibiotic overuse was largely due to farmers' concern for cattle welfare and desire for swift treatment of ailments. They believed that antibiotic use could be reduced through regulation and improved herd management activities. Participants did not view the dairy industry as a significant contributor to antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
